Morning all. My mother is t2 diabetic and has requested chocolate for Christmas. Obviously it has to be ‘diabetic chocolate’ but I’d like it to feel special and taste as good as possible. Any and all recommendations gratefully received Smile.

All diabetic chocolate is awful. Diabetes UK does not recommend it because as well as being vile, it is just as high in fat and calories as normal chocolate so still raises your blood sugar.

Instead they recommend v small portions of dark chocolate.

T2 diabetic who has managed to get into remission by altering my diet. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a "Diabetic friendly" chocolate for t2 diabetics. I know this from experience! As PP has said, a very small amount of dark chocolate is the only reasonable option...

It doesn't necessarily have to be "diabetic chocolate".
Most of them are full of artificial sweeteners and other nasty stuff.

After suffering dreadful stomach cramps for several days after eating a "diabetic chocolate" bar I was told by the diabetes nurse that there was no point having these and I could just have very small amounts of normal chocolate.

Yep as others say, diabetes specialists do not recommend so-called diabetic chocolate. Get some very rich chocolates so she will only eat one or two at a time.

Ah, ok. Good advice. Thank you all.

She’s never eaten loads of chocolate or sweet stuff in one sitting anyway (pre-diagnosis), so that’s useful to know.

Absolutely avoid the artificially sweetened 'diabetic' chocolate.

Look out for 100% cocoa solids Montezuma or Lindt 99% or even Lindt 90% chocolate.

90% is the highest carb value, 12g for the whole 100g bar. It divides easily into 10 squares, 1.2g carb per square is an 'affordable' treat and especially delicious with coffee.

One bar tends to last me a year, so is a very welcome Christmas present.
