Acro and gymnastics - will this confuse my DC?

Hi all,

DC is in gymnastics and has asked to also attend an acro class one day a week. I understand they are similar disciplines but landing and form etc are different.

I’m worried that attending acro may hinder her progress in her gymnastics (she’s about to make squad).

Any guidance most appreciated!

Talk to her gym instructor?

RamsayEaster · 18/10/2022 23:40

My daughter done both , eventually decided to concentrate on gymnastics and have up acro

Although the two disciplines are similar to look at they are very different in their individual movements

I would concentrate on one

Just my opinion

@ScottishLavender - your comment isn’t exactly helpful is it? 🤔

Thanks @RamsayEaster what I’ve been reading is telling me the same thing; concentrate on the one discipline as whilst similar they are actually very different and I don’t want to spread her too thinly.

@ChicagoBears

When she was doing both her gymnastics coach kept saying that’s the Afro way not the gymnastics way 😂

I would say it'll be confusing if she is taking gymnastics seriously. Trampolining or ballet could be fun but not too similar?

My DD (ex-elite competitive artistic gymnast) said that two girls who joined her squad who had previously done acro were super strong and flexible from their acro training, and it helped them progress to a high level very quickly in artistic gymnastics.

Also, my DD did ballet lessons as well as gymnastics as it was helpful for her floor and beam dance, and she said it was never a problem leaning the ballet way of doing leaps and splits, which was often not the same as the gymnastics versions of the same skills - she just thought of them as different skills.

You deliberately misread my reply. I meant, that her instructor is in a better position to know whether your daughter will be able to cope with the differences as he/she has trained her.

However, as she's your daughter, maybe reading comprehension might be a better use of her time.

Thank you for the feedback, unfortunately speaking to her instructor is like trying to speak to the pope as they are very very busy, hence why I came to wise ole mumsnet.

some definite food for thought - thank you!
