Attending midwife appointment with toddler

Has anyone taken their child with them to their midwife appointment and are they okay with it?
I wouldn't usually need to as someone can usually have DD for me but my childcare has just fell through and it's too short notice for anyone else. Fwiw it's my 16 week appointment, DD is 3 and is usually very well behaved.

Yes, I mentioned to my midwife at my booking appointment and she said she loves it when people bring their kids along so since then I've taken my DD (currently 14 months) to all of my midwife appointments.

duggeescatenid · 18/10/2022 16:14

@lilroo87 thanks, I think I'll just take her, I can't imagine I'll be there for long anyway. I would phone and ask but they are a nightmare to get through to.

If you have a mobile number for your midwife then you could text and ask but it should be fine to take her with you.
My DD is always so interested in what the midwife is doing and gets to hear babies heartbeat which she loves so I'm sure your DD will be intrigued and interested with everything in there aswell

I asked if I could and they preferred me not to. But if childcare has fallen through there’s not much you can do.

Itisbetter · 18/10/2022 16:18

Why wouldn’t you?

botleybump · 18/10/2022 16:19

My 16 week appointment was about 5-10 minutes long, sure it would be fine.
Did a co2 test, listened to heartbeat, asked how I was and if I'd had movement, did a Rhesus negative blood test for the baby (I'd received a letter in the post with a form), then booked the next appointment.

I'm sure they see children at these quite regularly!

kitcat15 · 18/10/2022 16:19

Still not allowed where I am in NW ( since covid)....and with cases rising again can't see it changing anytime soon

I took DD to one of mine about seven months ago as childcare fell through at last minute. She had a blast and thought me getting the anti-D injection in my bum was hilarious Grin Midwife wasn't fussed at all, and I often saw pregnant women with younger kids in waiting room when I went for my appointments.

Rocklobstershell · 18/10/2022 16:22

Yes they will be absolutely fine with it. I took my toddler to an ultrasound (non pregnancy) yesterday and she was grand and she’s not the most chilled child either. I took her in the buggy with an iPad (a few games and shows downloaded), a comic and lots of snacks. It was much (much) easier than I feared!

DappledThings · 18/10/2022 16:42

Of course, happens all the time. DS was allowed to press the buttons on the blood pressure monitor once and was thrilled.

duggeescatenid · 18/10/2022 16:45

Thanks everyone, I know when I received my letter for my ultrasound appointment it had written in big capitals at the top under no circumstances are children allowed to attend so I wasn't sure if the midwife appointments would be the same. I do have a mobile number for my midwife but she's not been the best at responding when I've messaged her in the past.
I'm sure DD will behave, she's already very interested in baby.

I took DD, 3 at the time, to my appointment and it was fine. Just call ahead to let them know in case their covid rules prohibit it

grey12 · 18/10/2022 16:55

I took 2 🤷🏻‍♀️

satelliteheart · 18/10/2022 17:14

I take my 2 year old to most of mine as the midwife clinic falls on a day he's not in childcare. Children are STRICTLY not allowed in scans here but the midwife doesn't have a problem with it at her appointments

PinkButtercups · 18/10/2022 17:20

Yes it's fine.

I took my DS (3) before he was in nursery and they were fine with it. They just don't allow them into NHS scans. Well, our hospital doesn't anyway.

PinkButtercups · 18/10/2022 17:21

In fact DS will be coming with me next week as it's half term.

Nursemumma92 · 18/10/2022 17:22

Yes midwife appointments should be fine, just most NHS trusts say no to ultrasounds as they are diagnostic and heaven forbid anything was wrong you wouldn't want a child present. My DD 4 came with me to mine before she started school and loved it!
