Period flu

Does anyone else get this?

For a few months now I've been feeling ill exactly 1 week before my periods. It feels like a cold/flu. Extreme fatigue, aches, low grade temp, feeling rundown.

I hadn't thought anything of it but then started noticing a pattern

Yes- I get this but have endometriosis

TheMousePipes · 18/10/2022 20:54

Yes! Also early 40’s!

Giveaschitt · 18/10/2022 21:01

Yes, I get this. Not sure whether I always have, or if I just notice it more because covid has made me hyper aware of feeling like I might be coming down with something... Made the connection several months ago that it was always in the week before my period. (I'm mid 40s)

Early 40s a few periods was in bed for a couple of days and posted on here and someone mentioned period flu.

Felt so non specifically ill. Totally wiped out. Very odd. Periods improved since then and now manageable. Previously had been heavy/ painful / sickness diArrhoea etc. faint with pain etc

Why did I not go to gp?!

bloodyplanes · 18/10/2022 21:13

Yep i get this, it's awful.

rainydaysandcake · 18/10/2022 21:15

Yes I get this, feel so crap, now also get hormonal migraines.

So fed up of periods now

Creatingusernamesismygame · 18/10/2022 21:16

I’ve always had a low grade fever 5-7 days before periods start. As I get closer to start date, I also get achy and tired like I’m run down. Have been like this since my late teens and still the same now in my early 40s

daretodenim · 18/10/2022 21:32

I had this. Took a week out of my life every month for a few years. Utter, utter nightmare (even more so after Corona arrived!). I would be dragging myself around all week, but at least one day that week I'd be in bed.

So I went on the pill and take packets back to back, because I can't use any form of implants or coils.

I end up forgetting every few months (not using it as contraception so no problem there) and I always realise because I end up feeling like I've got flu after two days.

I used to be super "natural", didn't take contraception as I didn't want artificial hormones, even tracked my cycles against the phases of the moon for about a year! But nowadays I don't give a shit. I just want to keep my fourth week every month. Life's too short to feel like crap when I don't need to!

daretodenim · 18/10/2022 21:33
  • and yes, migraines too. And they also come back if I forget to take the pill!
SPH112 · 20/10/2022 17:44

Wow I can't believe how common it is. I don't hear this talked about enough and how tough it can be to deal with periods.

I'm feeling less wiped out now but my tummy issues have showed up now. I'm 2 days away from period

If you take nurofen it really helps. Your lower intestine is right beside your ovaries & uterus in your abdomen. The excess progesterone irritates the bowel. If you take nurofen it stops the bowel irritation and helps everything along so much better.

Nearly 40 and have really noticed this in the last year too!

As a PO said, I wondered if it was partly since Covid.. being hyper aware of symtoms. But it is very distinct now, consistently each month, the 2-3 days before period I'm a ball of anxiety, sore throat, headaches, nausea, diarrhoea.. so always convinced I'm coming down with something.

Then the period comes and brings a host of other symptoms which are also worse with age!

goodintentionsonly · 02/01/2024 22:35

I could've written your post OP. I said to DH today maybe I should go back on the pill to see if that helps as sick of feeling like this. Period is due next week and I'm feeling achey all over, particularly my legs, terrible sore throat and just so tired. Felt the same last month and then got covid but I think I've read somewhere that your immune system dips before your period starts so easier to pick things up. I've also noticed it's worse from autumn to winter months which is when I got covid the first time around. I just feel instinctively that it's linked in some way as never had this before

Lovelyjubbbly · 02/01/2024 22:41

I had this the other day felt sick was sick migraine hot flushes actually had lots of pregnancy symptoms ( was just about to take a pregnancy test) as I was couple days late then period came along don’t know why I even considered taking a test my right side tubes and ovaries are completely in fixable due to severe Endometriosis! But I have noticed this ever since I was diagnosed always just 2 days before my period is due im bed bound 🙂

Oneeno · 02/01/2024 22:58

I would put my money on it being endometriosis

I have stage 4 endo and I have flu like symptoms which are horrendous and exhausting and this happens during ovulation more so than my period

I have it in my bowel so I can only describe it as like having severe food poisoning or stomach flu

MumPod · 02/01/2024 23:26

I get this too. Some months I really feel like a cold is coming. Throat feels little sore, runny nose, chills and then next day period comes and feel ok again. But I also get it now around mid cycle the hot and cold, fatigue etc. I'm in peri and it's been worse the last few years.

goodintentionsonly · 02/01/2024 23:49

@Oneeno I just googled endometriosis but I don't have any of the other symptoms 🤷🏼‍♀️ I definitely feel like my hormones haven't been the same since having DS aged3. I had milk for ages after I stopped breastfeeding. Very strange

moderationincludingmoderation · 03/01/2024 08:26

I get period flu - it's defo not Endo. For me it has been distinctly since approaching 40 - age related / peri related.

Glittzy · 03/01/2024 08:34

I have this at the moment. I've noticed I've had frequent colds but never linked it to my period. It's happened the past 3 months a week before period is due.

Oneeno · 03/01/2024 22:51

Endo never ticks the classic symptoms doctors reel off
What’s the obsession with peri menopause 🤷‍♀️

TurkeyTwizlers · 03/01/2024 22:53

Yes I get this, headache, temperature, have to go to bed early. Always feel too unwell to make dinner etc.

Meecrowavay · 03/01/2024 23:22

Early 40s and same here for at least a year now. I can't work out if it's changed because of peri, or from having children or if things have changed since I had Covid; which would time in with when I first noticed the changes. I get upset tummy, reflux, hot and a bit fluey. Cycles still as regular as clockwork.

I have been scanned for endo, defo isnt and I get this too.

phallusfallacy · 04/01/2024 08:19

Does anyone have this who DIDN'T have the covid vaccine? Or suffered it prior? My cycle went haywire and the symptoms like pp describe started when i had the 1st and got worse after the 2nd vaccine. I was too scared to have the boosters in case it was related.
