Why are my children always ill when we have something booked?!

We are on half term this week and I have booked train tickets and a premier inn for a night away for my and the kids. DS said he felt ill this afternoon and promptly fell asleep at 5pm. A little warm but not a raging temp, a bit of tummy ache but not sick. He is 4.
Fingers crossed he wakes up fine tomorrow but I swear this happens every time! Parties, Christmas, family get togethers, weddings, anything NICE we have planned, one of the kids will be ill- guaranteed!

Does this happen in other peoples families too, or are we cursed?!!

Always. Especially if it's something you are really looking forward to

scrivette · 17/10/2022 19:25

Yes happens to us too, plus on the very rare occasion I have booked a day off of work during term time one of the DC is ill.

Clarabellawilliamson · 17/10/2022 19:34

Yep- they more I look forward to it, the more likely it is! It's one of the reasons I can't see us booking a foreign holiday any time soon (well, that and the cost!)

I know it's only one night away, but I really want to go!

Same, every bloody time. Puts me off booking things tbh.

LillyBugg · 17/10/2022 20:24

Yes...we are away Friday for a long weekend and my youngest came home from school with a temperature. Pretty much bets on that the rest of us go down with it as well.

LizTrussIsACylon · 17/10/2022 20:26

Yep. Not so much DS, but I swear DD gets noro every time we have something big planned.

Cuppasoupmonster · 17/10/2022 20:29

Same here, every sodding time we book annual leave. It’s happening now! DH had a few days off off to do some much needed DIY before we put the house on the market. I’ve been unwell with hyperemesis so can’t do much. DD promptly came down with a cold and high temperature type bug on Saturday afternoon, so DH has had to cancel the DIY and look after her today. She’s not well enough to go back to nursery tomorrow but possibly Wednesday. He’s back to work on Thursday anyway. Solidarity!

I thought I was being clever this year, booking leave the first and last week of the summer holidays instead of together. Nope, last day of term DD came home with chickenpox, which lasted a week. Last week DS came down with Covid and came it to me. We managed one thing out of everything I had planned.

teraculum29 · 17/10/2022 20:39

Story of my life...
Last year, going abroad for 2 weeks, DD a week before managed to get false positive Covid test so we had to isolate and rebook the holiday.
Later that year DD was invited for birthday party, on the day of the party she managed to fracture her collar bone so instead of party we went to Minor Injuries.

And this year for her own birthday party and birthday day itself she was poorly with Covid.
And at the beginning summer we meant to go to Weymouth, but she manageg to get tonsilitis.

So yes my DD has a form of being ill when something is nice booked.

I decided in September to go away with my friend to Alton Towers, staying over the night before.

Well about 2 hours before I was due to leave, guess who broke her arm in two places and had to be admitted for surgery!

Clarabellawilliamson · 17/10/2022 21:12

Oh I'm so sorry to you all- at least it's not just us.
My mum is determined to be much more spontaneous with family get togethers after having so many let downs! Perhaps I should take her lead (makes everything more expensive though!)

Same here OP. I find it's always the school holidays too.
At Easter break my 3 kids had chicken pox.
September weekend we had a vomiting bug. We had booked the weekend away.

This week is half term, 2/3 of mine are ill.

Its the risk you take with young kids I reckon 😫
I hope your little one is ok.

FrozenGhost · 18/10/2022 04:06

Same thing happens here. My two dc are rarely ever sick, they have been sick probably 5 times (combined) this year. Unrelated to that, I rarely go out, I have booked a babysitter 5 times this year. 4 of those times coincided!

SpringRainbow · 18/10/2022 05:12

Part of the reason I rarely ever book anything or make plans.

Londonnight · 18/10/2022 06:05

My son is an adult now, but we went for about 5 years between when he was 5 - 10 with him going down with tonsillitis EVERY Christmas!! He would be absolutely fine until Christmas Eve, then all symptoms would start.
He finally had his tonsils out and we could have peaceful Christmas's :)

Mol1628 · 18/10/2022 06:08

Always. So annoying.

Philosophia8 · 18/10/2022 06:27

Yes, its happened to us too.
Travelled a long distance to a wedding. DS was very poorly=sick!! And had to spend the whole time in the hotel room with my DH and missed the whole wedding.

OhamIreally · 18/10/2022 08:08

Same here. Half term next week we fly out Saturday morning. DD poorly with high temperature. It's looking like touch and go at the moment as to whether we can go.
