Tesco accidental refund. What would you do?

Tesco accidentally refunded me an online shop that had been delivered. DP said I should keep quiet but I thought if it was the other way round I'd expect my money back so contacted them and they are going to take the money again.

Just interested in what others would do. On one hand they are a large company that won't go bust and we could have done with the extra money. On the other I was prepared to pay and expected to pay so I haven't lost anything by being honest.

I'm hoping for some good karma for this!

I would probably be honest, I'm a believer in karma and think that in these instances we should be honest.

I would contact them and be honest about it. Hopefully they'll let you keep it!!

Floralnomad · 17/10/2022 15:56

I’d have told them .

Georgeskitchen · 17/10/2022 15:58

Keep schtum
They make enough profit

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/10/2022 15:58

I got some stuff from Tesco direct once and inside were some things I hadn’t ordered or been charged for. Yellow cot sheets, a big activity teddy thing and something else. At the time I was skint and had a newborn. I rang to tell them, they gave me hassle and I had to wait in for a courier who messed me about. I wish I’d kept those things.

I say, keep the refund and enjoy the gift from the universe. Don’t hand it back like I did.

I did and they are taking it! I have had luck in the past with a few online deliveries that have let me keep items but I guess that is because of the hassle of arranging pick ups.

I probably wouldn't have. I'd have waited to see if they noticed and charged me again but if they hadn't corrected the mistake I can't say I'd have flagged it to them

I remeber something like this happening with a company. They charged me for a product, it was delivered and then they refunded me stating it was out of stock. I rang them and they said according to the system , I had never gotten the product and they couldn't take back the money.

AdoraBell · 17/10/2022 16:01

I would contact them.

Read up on Dame Shirley Porter the Tesco heiress and according to Nicholas Lehzard the most corrupt British public figure in living memory with the possible exception of Robert Maxwell.

I'd have been in two minds but probably told them, I'd be worried that the money would suddenly disappear when I was skint. I once withdrew £50 from a cash machine and dd who was small at the time managed to press the cancel button just as it spat the money out. The £50 was refunded to my account. I went into the bank and the woman was really surprised and said just keep it, she had never seen it happen before and they didn't have a procedure to rectify it. Bonus 😗Grin

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 17/10/2022 16:12

I would have definitely kept it

marsbara · 17/10/2022 16:16

I think it's always good to be honest. You did the right thing.

If Tesco was smart they'd offer you a small voucher as a goodwill gesture though. Always nice to reward honesty.

Runningintolife · 17/10/2022 16:22

I had this discussion with my ds recently. Honesty and morality is important to me and not conditional, so I would do the same as you. Society and community breaks down once we drop the standards we hold ourselves and each other to. Plus Karma!

HighlandPony · 17/10/2022 16:24

Because it’s Tesco I’d keep it. That would be karma for them for all the crappy things they do to fleece folk and generally upset the place. If it was my local shop or the wee butchers or the bakers or something I’d say.

No goodwill gesture but the lady on the phone thanked me a lot.

It's good to be honest, as actually the person who would end up paying the mistake would be the delivery driver, not the profits of Tesco.

It's easy to say Tesco are making huge profits, but ultimately, every single loss is just something that goes into their increasing prices.

You did the right thing OP.

ArcaneWireless · 17/10/2022 17:01

I’d have done the same as you OP.

woodhill · 17/10/2022 17:01

I think it's best to be honest about it

RebeccaRose92 · 17/10/2022 17:15

This happened to me once. With Tesco too. I was skint so didn’t tell them. But I thought about it so much and the guilt ate away at me. Some people may think I’m joking but I’m not. I kept thinking someone’s going to bang on my door demanding for the stuff back. I never ordered from there again.
