The weirdest thing- what to do?

So at 6.45 this morning, so still dark for context. I opened my bedroom window to let the cat out. He likes to go out and sit on a flat roof. I left the window open and blind open whilst I tidied around in bedroom.
I caught sight of a flashing in the window and looked out to see someone standing opposite my window taking pictures. He had taken at least 6 in quick succession.

I shouted down saying ‘what are you doing’ (not thinking first thing in the morning). He shouted up that he was just taking photos of the cat. I then shouted ‘well don’t do that’ and the cat came in so I slammed the window shut and he moved off.
It has left me a bit shook up and wondering if it is something and nothing or if you would be worried about it?

Yep, you're over thinking it. Cute cat sitting on the flat roof... I'd take photos. It's not dark/dark at that time of morning, it's a nice light for photos.

Read the OP. Very first sentence says it was still dark.

Shitfather · 17/10/2022 15:42

This would freak me out. I agree the timing is odd . Keep an eye out. Do you have a crazy ex?

Shitfather · 17/10/2022 15:46

For context, I guess a pic of your cat would help this conversation.

Hillrunning · 17/10/2022 15:54

I take a photo of almost every cat I see out in public. Husband often does too. Wouldn't occur to me that anyone would think i was being odd.

But why is he even there, at 6.45, camera/phone in hand, anticipating a cat appearing? It's like he'd been waiting for it, after watching the property or something.

Is there any reason anyone would object to your cat going out and being on the flat roof, OP?

I agree

Whatever he was doing, he had no respect for your privacy. Anyway what grown man has never seen a cat before to the extent of needing to wait at a window at stupid-o-clock when it’s not very light to photograph it? Never mind the obvious issue of taking photos of other people’s windows.

Creepy stalkerish behaviour but total amateur if he didn’t know how to turn off his flash.

What a bizarre over-reaction. Man who likes cats walks down road - maybe on way to qwork - perfectly possible at 6.45am. Or could be an early riser and likes the quiet mornings to walk. Sees cute cat. Gets out phone and takes photos of it.

Totally normal. Totally legal. If OP had been half dressed I might doubt who he was taking photos of.

We really don't need to spend our lives in utter disgust that other people intersect with us. Nor assume that all men are perverts. It's exhausting and reductive.

Suzi888 · 17/10/2022 16:02

I think it’s a bit odd. He may have been just snapping the cat, I’d just keep an eye outside when opening windows. Be vigilant with the doors etc.

Suzi888 · 17/10/2022 16:02

He could have been taking photos of anything- don’t know it was the cat for definite.

Not sure where you're seeing disgust on this thread, but being vigilant about men acting strangely in the dark is pretty prudent, even if it's entirely innocent. Of course not all men are perverts, literally no one has said they are, just that this behaviour is a little strange, so perhaps caution should be advised.
OP describes herself as "pretty shook up" with what happened, so it clearly seemed strange and worrying to her.

Littledidsheknow · 17/10/2022 16:10

Sorry, no idea how or why I quoted @Suzi888 !

BuryingAcorns · 17/10/2022 16:11

@Littledidsheknow - I saw disgust in @PeekabooAtTheZoo thinking a man taking a photo of a cat is 'creepy stalkerish beaviour.'

I'd call it 'a man taking a photo of a cat.'

BadNomad · 17/10/2022 16:56

If you were fully dressed in a dark house I really doubt he was taking photos of you. Would he even be able to see you in there? He probably just saw your cat pootling about on the roof and thought it was cute/funny and wanted to take a pic to show someone.

Could have been the window setup that he was photographing... a window next to a flat roof is a bit vulnerable and a good possible illegal entry point.
Yes, I know, probably not; but it's not impossible to see how this man's behaviour could be construed as something other than innocent, so I'm not surprised that OP was spooked.

MaMisled · 17/10/2022 18:46

There's actually an Instagram page of cats in windows.

I follow that page, I love seeing cats just doing their thing and often take pics of random ones I come across.

houseargh · 17/10/2022 19:03

We live in an Instagram world. He probably thought something about the cat on the roof in the half light made a cool picture. I imagine it probably did. Instagram is literally full of this kind of thing. Of course you are within your rights to object when it's your cat/roof/window but all the people saying it sounds incredibly suspect must be living under an actual rock!

SniggleSnarf · 17/10/2022 19:29

Not middle of the night but dark!

I find it very strange that any adult would have multiple pictures of random cats. I bet you would all find it strange if it was OPs kid having a nap on the flat roof....

Well of course, but it wasn't 🙄

BadNomad · 17/10/2022 19:42

Lol I think if her kid was out on the roof people would be banging on her door rather than taking photos.
