Pay rise query

Inspired by another thread about pay and I wondered if I could get advice.

I'm an AHP currently employed by a charity. I'm working out my notice period and will be starting a new job next month.

After reading the other thread, I realise I should have attempted some negotiation on pay before accepting the new job. Unfortunately I didn't!

Given that I've missed the boat on any pay discussion prior to starting, I was thinking of waiting until I've worked my probationary period and then initiating a conversation about it.

Does this sound reasonable? What would I say? I've never negotiated pay before in more than 20 years of work but I know I'm good at my job.

Sounds reasonable - because then you'll have an idea of what the job is actually entailing, and whether you've got any other skills which could add to the role (or justify a different "seniority" or grading). Give them reasons why you're worth a higher salary. and / or is there anything other than hard cash you'd negotiate on? I'm sorry I don't know what a AHP is - but rather than just be asking for a higher salary, as a manager I'd be looking for you to define that you've got {x} skill which brings {y} benefit to the organisation. Is it something you could introduce in stages - you'd gradually take over {x} task with a salary increase at {y} date.. Every company will be bound by budgets, but look at what brings benefit to them as well as you.

Only downside really is that if nothing comes of the discussions, what would you do? Would you still be happy in this new role with the previously agreed salary, or would you want to look again?

Thank you, that's so helpful.

(Apology for the acronym, AHP = Allied Health Professional)

Do you work in the NHS? If so, very little chance of negotiation.

No, my current role and my new one are in the private sector.
