Water bill!

solosunflower · 16/10/2022 13:22

Moved into a new build three months ago. Just received my water bill from July to October. £239. Honestly want to cry. One bath, wash a few dishes and one batch of washing daily. Surely this can't be right?

It's accurate, water meter

So I took a reading this morning, turned water off at stop clock and left for work. 12 hours reading is still the same.

It depends on the area as well so no point comparing other than with people on same water board
Out water board is one of the most expensive ones and we spend around £60-65 a month , 4 of us

My mum had a huge bill recently and when they checked meter the water board had checked next doors and not my mums

Did you give them a reading when you moved in?

I'd do the same tomorrow but with it left on, that'll show if there is a leak inside somewhere, or it it is based on genuine usage

gogohmm · 17/10/2022 20:50

Our a is circa £45 a month for 3-5 adults. I suspect a leak

Floydthebarber · 17/10/2022 20:54

I'm with Severn Trent. When we were on a meter it was about £50 a month, that was with a family of 4, washing up once a day, at least one load of washing, 2 daily showers plus a bath every other day maybe for dc.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 17/10/2022 20:57

OK, that means there isn't a leak or some one else plumbed in between the meter and the stopcock.

Now you need to know if there is a leak somewhere further on than the stopcock.

Turn the stopcock on, make sure there's no water running - no washing machine, dishwasher, hot /cold water tank filling, loo filling up. Go out and look at the meter. Is there anything moving at all? Usually there's a little spinner that goes round if water's passing through. If you're not sure if anything should move for a small amount of water then you could check by turning on the cold kitchen tap (as that will definitely be direct feed from the mains) and going out and seeing if anything is moving.

If nothing's moving when you're not drawing any water, make sure nothing is going to draw water while you're out at work, and read the meter when you leave and as soon as you get back. That would hopefully show if you have a small leak.

I believe I may I gotten to the bottom of it. The reading when I moved in was given to ST as: 00007

I have a document which says the actual reading was: 00075

Definitely explains it. Hopefully it'll be simple to sort out. If you imagine it as a 1m deep swimming pool, it's a lot of water!

solosunflower · 17/10/2022 21:51

Fingers crossed! I've sent an email and attached the original readings given to me by the developer. I'll also follow up with a phone call tomorrow.

Water company once charged me X10, the idiots, as the guy who read the meter put the decimal place or the 0 (can't remember now) in the wrong place. When I rang they asked me was I a small factory or did I have a very large family and I said no just me in a tiny studio flat!! They resolved it quickly after I took a photo and sent it to them and said I'd default on my mortgage if they didn't put back the money they'd taken out. I think they will sort it out for you now OP, good luck!

solosunflower · 17/10/2022 21:56

Oh wow that is crazy and scary!!

My current reading is: 00084. Does that seem about right?

Our first quarterly gas bill when we moved into our new build was over £3k. As a young first time buyer I absolutely freaked out.

Turned out the meter reader had read our meter completely wrong!

RaininSummer · 17/10/2022 22:21

Mine is around that but am in the south west so expensive.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 17/10/2022 22:23

Two of us, x2 daily showers, occasional baths, twice a week washing machine no dishwasher, we pay £3.50 a month on meter.

RaininSummer · 17/10/2022 22:25

I am so jealous of your water bill. We aren't heavy users and have a meter but our bill is way way more.

fingerscrossed27 · 17/10/2022 22:29

We pay £82 a month water for 5 of us in a detached house but I wouldn't say we use an excessive amount, does this seem correct, I do wonder if we have leak somewhere?
