Who do I ask for breastfeeding support?

Baby had her five day check yesterday. Feels like baby has a shallow latch on one side especially. I asked MW to check and she said it’s fine but to “keep working on it” if uncomfortable and seemed in a bit of a rush. The side in question has a painful latch and doesn’t seem to empty fully.

we have another check at 10 days, is there someone else who can help me in the meantime? Health visitors said they ring round after 10-14 days. Feeling stuck with a painful boulder boob and not keen on blocked ducts or mastitis…happy for any other hints here too as well…

Get in touch with a lactation consultant.

pixieg1rl · 16/10/2022 11:45

Try ABM abm.me.uk/get-breastfeeding-support/

They have lots of support, remote and virtual and possibly local to you.

It's very early days, so try not to worry about what might happen, but ask for help whenever you need it.

Sorry pressed send to soon. Or call the national breastfeeding hotline and they can help. There are probably lots of breastfeeding drop in clinics in your area too. Often find out about them via Facebook. But honestly, lactation consultants are worth their weight in gold. Well worth the £

Thank you! Is there anything available on the NHS? The ones in my area charge £160/hour which I haven’t got right now. First baby didn’t have any issues with latch so this is all quite new to me 😐

Breastfeeding network have a helpline. Local peer support groups. Or if you can pay, a private IBCLC (lactation consultant).

You could try the La Leche League

www.laleche.org.uk/call/

That's a mental price. Some of the most high demand lactation consultants in south London are £50 for a zoom consultation and 2 weeks of follow up support.

National Breastfeeding Helpline? It’s free: 0300100 0212

National breastfeeding helpline is open 9:30am-9:30pm everyday. Trained breastfeeding supporters will answer your call: 0300 100 0212

also have a look if there are any peer support groups run by Breastfeeding Network, LLL or ABM. Sometimes they have groups or can offer 1:1 support.

MrsFionaCharming · 16/10/2022 12:45

Try posting on your local area Facebook and see if there’s a latch on or similar community project.

Thank you all xx

Have you checked the timetable at your nearest childrens centres? Mine used to hold clinics every week run by a breastfeeding counsellor.

wishuponastar1988 · 16/10/2022 13:32

Google your local infant feeding team - they are usually based at the hospital or childrens centre. I called and had someone visit me the next day!

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 16/10/2022 13:43

Ring your health visitor and they should be able to put you in touch with an nfant feeding team/breastfeeding peer supporter. I go to a breastfeeding group every week at our local children's centre with peer supporters
