Anyone else using candles to take the edge off no heating??

Im not a scented candle woman but I've been given a few over the years. I've currently got 5 burning in the room... it's a bit warmer 😬

I know it's much worse for me and the environment than putting the heating on but still...

Battery LED candles don't give out heat but are safe.

I can’t see why a pot makes any difference from just the candles on their own. There is no increase in energy beyond the 5 candles?

Yes. Ye cannae change the laws o physics Capn! The same amount of heat is generated by the candles.

With candles alone, they heat the air around them, which rises up to the ceiling above you.

With the flower pot, the clay heats up and stores the heat, giving it off slowly. Same principle as a brick oven.

We have candles lit every evening and I do think it makes the room feel warmer

Obviously candles won’t heat a room , unless you’ve a fuck ton of them in a small room for a considerable period., but it might make your mind think it is. And that’s fine, if you think it’s warmer then it’s warmer.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2022 00:19

I'd be a bit concerned that several candles under a pot might not have adequate oxygen supply to allow for complete combustion and might be more liable to produce carbon monoxide than exposed ones. This advice from the fire service it says 'Keep candles apart. Leave at least four inches (10cm) between two burning candles' (along with other good advice).

Where do you all live? Our thermostat is at 17.5 and the heating hasn't clicked on for three/four evenings. In the South East there is no reason to worry about being cold yet as far as I am aware and the forecast to the end of October looks fair.

I’d feel very cold indeed if my house was 17.5. I’m also in the south east, we have the log burner on all day and the house is toasty warm.

I’m glad I’m not the only one! Our heating has come in a couple of times in the morning (radiator has been warm when I get up) but so far not at all during the day or evening. DH works from home and DS is home all day but they’ve both told me that they are not cold at all.
We went for a walk yesterday morning and very quickly removed our light jackets and were just in T-shirts!

Got up at 7:30 this morning and thermostat says it’s already 18.5 degrees in the house so no heating needed here today.
193Os house with loft conversion so roof insulation but only way to insulate walls would be some sort of external cladding I think.

I do enjoy a candle but I light them for scent not warmth!

Howmanysleepsnow · 16/10/2022 08:52

It was down to 7 degrees outside overnight here, and a high of 12 yesterday. The thermostat said 16.5 last night, but is at 15.5 now. NW England here. We’ve not had the heating on at all yet this year, so any heat is generated by the people and dogs in the house or by cooking etc. The house is nearly 200 years old. The only insulation is loft insulation and double glazing: no cavity walls and not got tens of thousands spare to pay for external wall insulation as much as I’d like it.

Floweryflora · 16/10/2022 09:00

I really don’t understand these posts proclaiming it to be almost balmy, of course it feels warmer when walking outside, inside you are often sitting, it gets colder in the evenings. Yes it will get much colder as winter progresses but that doesn’t mean folks aren’t cold now

It’s lovely you don’t but the op is clearly cold. For gods sake rhe woman’s lit five candles in the desperate hope those five little flames will heat the room. Telling her she shouldn’t feel cold or it’s in her imagination is ludicrous and utterly self absorbed.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/10/2022 09:17

I was up until midnight last night and it was fine @Floweryflora. To be fair I whipped a cami on under my warmish top at 3.30 yesterday because dh and went for our covid jabs and just in case I had to take my top off.

I appreciate we run warm but would venture that anyone who is presently "freezing" could do with a check for anaemia/vit D/and possibly anxiety/stress which makes people run cold.

We benefit from an East/West facing 1920s house which is sheltered and double glazed. Many of the tips I have read up on we have always adopted: turn a degree down, thick curtains, close doors, putting on a jumper and keeping feet warm. We rarely have heating on overnight except when it is very cold. In the winter we have an open fire and bung an extra log on.

Malfi · 16/10/2022 09:28

Isn’t there a danger of those terracotta pots exploding? I thought there was.

Very interesting all the comments.

With lining curtains to insulate, do you actually attach the blanket or lining physically or do you hang it behind your "summer" curtains ?

I believe there are also insulating blinds - anyone know anything about them ?

I am going to build my tea light stove and will report on it. Good idea about the bin guard.

I get that the point was the op isn’t warm at night, and neither are others, as we can see people sadly desperately trying to warm them selves round candles and plant pots of all things. They wouldn’t be doing this if they were warm. No one would. You don’t do that shit for fun.

Jessiesthedog · 16/10/2022 10:24

After one of my children set fire to the curtains fire a candle absolutely not happening in this house with animals and children present.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/10/2022 10:27

I would venture that a warm drink, warm socks, possibly a hat and a hot water bottle would be both safer and more effective than tea lights under flower pots.

Presently in the Homebase car park and the sun is shining warmly on the car. No need for a coat.

Littlemisspawpatrol · 16/10/2022 10:28

I was really worried about putting the heating on but I turned all the radiators off, apart from the living room and my bedroom. Closed all the doors and put the thermostat onto 19. It won't come on any lower than that because it's in the hall next to a radiator which I can't turn off. I checked the cost and it only cost 50p to have on overnight. I think putting it on one or two evenings a week at the moment keeps the house from feeling too cold and keeps enough in the pot to pay for the winter.

ProbAmU · 16/10/2022 11:55

Luckily we haven't needed the heating yet, DP has suggested it a couple of times but I've then pointed out he needs to put more clothes on. I've always had blankets as standard and have had a heated throw for about 5 years. I'm dreading when we do need the heating as we're on a card meter for gas and have spent £60 already this month on hot water alone. I'm in the East of England and it's still pretty warm here fortunately

People react differently to the cold.
I'm fine during the day, but in the evening I can't sit down without heating.

I'm pretty sure I have bad circulation.
Also, even though I'm not in the UK and can get a doctor's appointment easily, you can't just get whatever test you want.

KitchenSupper · 16/10/2022 12:11

Are candles cheaper than heating? Genuine question, has anyone done the maths?

Bestcatmum · 16/10/2022 12:13

I look like a walking duvet. There is also a duvet on the sofa and the cats sit on me all the time I'm not moving for extra warmth.
I dont rely care about no heating apart from when I have to get out of the shower because I was brought up on a freezing farm with an outside loo. If you keep moving you'll be ok.

Candles don’t heat your room.

FireworksAndSparklers · 16/10/2022 12:15

My plan this winter is lots of wool layers! And thermal base layers, hot water bottles, hot drinks etc. We also have thermal lined curtains and thermal blinds which were incredibly effective at keeping the heat out during the heatwaves so we're hoping will be similarly effective in the other direction IYSWIM.

No fire here or ability to have one but in a newish build fairly well insulated.

Does anyone else find memory foam mattresses seem to store body heat too? It can take me ages to warm up when I go to bed (sometimes takes a hot bath!) but I get so warm later on in the night and can feel warmth coming from the mattress.
