My youngest who is 6 and has SEN needs had a beavers event this morning to attend its annoyed me so much all day so I need to express.
It was a drop and go one way system their ideal was the child gets out of the car and you must drive on when I got there I saw none of his leaders in sight so I parked the car up and got him out.
I then was shouted at because I had parked up at the side out of the way of anyone else and I was told its a drop and go.
I shouted back his 6 with sen needs with a child lock on his door he needs help and there was none of his beavers leaders around to leave him with either so, im not going to just leave him stood at the side of a field.
His leader did show up a few minutes later and I said to her right im leaving him with you as I've been told off and she says yeah its a drop and go system. At pick up time I had to collect him and the drop my eldest off for her turn again I was shouted at because I hadn't stopped in the correct place and again I had to get out of the car to open her door (child lock is on) and then help the youngest into the car and I said to the leader this is ridiculous you cant expect parents to stay in the car and young children to get their selfs out of the cars by them selfs when most kids probably have car locks on their doors the parents have to help get them out or strap them back into their car seats.

Its wound me up so much it was so poorly organised and ive got to go back in a bit again to now pick the eldest up.

Seems like it was organised more for Cubs and Scouts than Beavers. I used to be a Beaver leader and we'd expect an actual handover for kids that age (ie leader sees parent). Even without disabilities, loads of kids that age would need reassurance on drop off at a new place, and leaders need to know who they've got where. Cubs, again parents tend to come into the hall/ field with them to start with, but I can see drop and go working if their familiar leaders were right there. By Scouts (so age 10.5 +) a drop and go as you described would probably be appropriate

At 6, no SEN, I wouldn't have been dropping and going without seeing an adult.
We would also have had the child locks on.
YANBU.

Not sure how much older your oldest is. I might have removed the child lock if you knew this was the system for them, but age dependant.

Remember these are unpaid volunteers, giving up their weekend.

If you can run it better go and help. In fact go and help anyway...

Yeah it’s common for scouts events. But should be better managed for beavers, more so those with SEN or those on their first camps.

I’ve done them with hand overs and the car parks can be utter carnage. So I can see why it’s deemed the better plan.

Child lock is irrelivent surely as you can just turn it off so they can get out the car, however i would only let DD at that age out of the car if i could see the adult who was going to be looking after her. I wouldn't have parked up, i would have just queued up in the drop and go line but waited till the leader appeared and then let DD out the car

PuttingDownRoots · 15/10/2022 14:29

The issue seems to be that their leader wasn't there. Usually we have a leader from each group standing at the drop off point.

The big events work like that as there isn't space and time for parents to work. We encourage lift sharing for the same reason.

Lichensclerosus · 15/10/2022 16:13

I've also been told by my eldest whos 8 that whilst she was there on her session the lady who shouted at me said
"oh (x)....mum was manic "

Whether I belive her or not is a different matter she has a habit of making things up

Yeah, these things can be chaotic.

Give them a break, they are volunteers, or, go and help them do it better.

All the cars I've ever had, the child lock has had a physical switch on the door to turn it off and on so you would have to turn it off before the journey which makes the child lock pointless. Granted, I don't know if newer cars have a central button but lots of parents drive older, basic models.

Lichensclerosus · 15/10/2022 16:36

My car has an old locking system i have to use the engine key to turn it off underneath the bonnet its an absolute pain i appreciate what people are saying they are volunteers but still absolutely stressful situation and not thought of at all also there was no need for the rude shoutyness in front of children

Also just to add this wasn't a free event we had to pay for it

They are still volunteers. The cost is for food and entertainment

The fact you had to pay to cover the costs doesn't take away from the fact that the Leaders, event organisers and people standing in the car park to help things go smoothly are all volunteers. Hmm

Sherrystrull · 15/10/2022 18:31

I think you should offer to sort out the organisation of the car park for them.
