What's that latin phrase where people present an argument as though it were a gotcha

Jordan Petersen does this with his arguments. Like in response to a statement that men are dominant in society he lists off ''men are more likely to be depressed, men are more likely to commit suicide, men are more likely to drop out of school'' and he presents these as a gotcha, so no, men aren't more dominant in society.

But yet, men still get paid more even though they drop out of school more often, and women aren't responsible for men committing suicide.

But he does this with all of his arguments, presents them like they were Night Follows Day.

Does anybody know the latin phrase I mean? I was chatting to my friend about JP yesterday and we both agree that he does this and it's so annoying.

non sequitur (noun) · non sequiturs (plural noun) · nonsequitur (noun) · nonsequiturs (plural noun)
a conclusion or statement that does not logically follow from the previous argument or statement:

Is that what you mean?

Thank you. 😊 V helpful post. Should have gone to my Spanish! Seguir might have put me on the right track.

I agree @SiobhanSharpe
Love blindboy's take on this.
He advises young depressed men to embrace feminism for these reasons.

I think his point is that one must define “dominant in society” before one says whether one sex is more dominant than another.

Men's mental health issues are commonly brought up as reasoning that actually women are dominant in society and need bringing down. It's an embarrassingly poor argument, but because it's based on a true and valid observation people get confused.

There are orgs trying to help men's metal health. People like Jordan P ignore them because they don't blame women. The book "Men Who Hate Women" by Laura Bates is a fascinating read and goes into this.

I have never heard JP argue that women are dominant in society and need ‘bringing down’. He was a working clinical psychologist, so I’m sure has a good grasp of what organisations help people with their mental health. Maybe you’re mixing him up with someone else?

It might be this.
But if you can have a non sequitur, can you have a si sequitur!!?

No. Latin doesn't technically have words that mean 'yes' and 'no' in the short form that we use them. Non is the simple way to make a negative (as opposed to the strong ways, like 'never', 'nobody', 'nothing'), to have an affirmative sentence you just leave it out. So the negative is non sequitur, the positive is just sequitur tout court.

I do not understand the hate some people have for JP.

Is there a Latin word for "not listening to a person's arguments but dismissing them on the grounds that they don't fit your existing beliefs about the world"?

I'm pretty sure there is.

I didn't attribute the words you quote to JP.
I recommend the book if you want to see how his arguments and observations get used by the incel and woman-hating communities online.

Really? Feminism made me miserable and I'm a woman.

Maybe you should get him a copy of JP's 12 Rules for Life. It's an excellent guide, especially for young men.

LizziesTwin · 15/10/2022 14:20

Women and men attempt to take their lives at similar rates but men generally use more violent methods which are more successful.

You didn’t, I noticed, but I thought it was worth stating the fact that Peterson’s never made those arguments for some of the hard-of-thinking folk in the thread. Unfortunately the incel folk are hard-of-thinking and hateful, never a great combination regardless of who’s words they’re misunderstanding and repeating out of context. I’m familiar with his 3 books, thanks though.

Ah, thanks for clarifying @HariboReckoning

So impressed by everybody's Latin!
