Job application examples of positive attitude which benefits the whole team

I'm completing an application and the xact question is 'Please proved 3 examples of times when your own positive attitude has resulted in a better outcome for the entire team'.

I have one where I offered to champion a new IT system that everyone was hesitant about. But I find the question really odd actually. I'm finding it hard to come up with examples that don't make my team look bad (for not having a good attitude themselves). Have loads of examples of where my planning or management skills resulted in a good outcome but specifically my attitude is just odd.

Can anyone think of the type of examples that could be used here? This is for a gardening job by the way.

Anything you've done around managing workload? E.g. team felt overwhelmed but you took the initiative to lead them in planning a way to cope with the workload.

Yes to PP suggestion above. How about an example of motivating people about something/being positive/supportive to people?

SummerLightning · 15/10/2022 08:58

For a gardening job?! I like the IT system one. Bend your others to the question too. For me, the sort of things this applies to is general persistence in asking for something to happen until it sticks. Doesn't have to be negative about others as the others may be busy and just need you to lead it/ make it happen . Sometimes you just need someone to lead something and believe in it until it builds momentum. If they want 3 examples one can be something small I reckon. For me, examples of small ones would be setting up online social things to build cohesion at remote work.

If it’s gardening are they looking for examples like ‘it might be chucking it down with rain but I will still be a pleasant person to work with’? Or ‘yes we have to shift a lot of soil but I won’t spend the whole time complaining’?

mrsjimhopper · 15/10/2022 09:16

For this role, I'd go with helping out colleagues to get a job finished on time, extra shifts to cover absent colleagues, 'mentoring' new colleagues, liaising with management over issues or ideas.

mrsjimhopper · 15/10/2022 09:17

Just remember to give an example of each.

Use the STAR model and dont forget to mention what you learned as a result

shinynewapple22 · 15/10/2022 09:30

What's the STAR model?

Hillrunning · 15/10/2022 09:45

Star model is Situation, Task, Action Results. Its jsut a way to frame your answer so that it is clear and succinct. Particularly helpful during interviews when your are nervous

Thanks for the ideas all, I have focused on others being negative and hadn't thought about people being busy or new or us being short hand so that's has been good.

^I agree.

Your own positive attitude to a sponsored bungee jump helped raise team morale and kept anxieties to a minimum. Or does it need to be work base related?

They are looking for much more than that judging by the other questions. I also have to:

describe a time when business requirements went against sustainability principles and how I responded to this.

a time when a colleagues horticultural knowledge was incorrect and how I responded

Thoes are easy enough though but they definitely want details.

Could be something like this. I did instigate a summer bbq and Christmas party with another department that I could argue created team bonding and cross department relationships

For goodness sake. Why do they assume people will have examples of niche things like this? Most companies nowadays spend all their time being performatively sustainable.

Ha, that's the one question i wasnt worried about. Sustainability has been a consideration in horticulture for a while. Any decent gardener will know about the challenges of peat or pesticides at the very least surely. I guessed they had it in there to sort the old school 'I control nature' gardeners from the newer 'I tend to nature' types?

The sustainability question could be from 20 years ago. It doesn't really matter. Just state that at the start.

Eg "most most recent roles as x, I ensure that I comply with the clear and fundamental practises of sustainable horticulture embedded throughout the business. However in 2002 A situation arose when .... is suggested that... and they were did and the client was ...
