Just that, really. Wondering what is normal?

It sounds like I give a lot but there's two of us, and all our money goes into one pot. We're housebound because of DH so we need a lot less money than most. We don't drink or smoke and if you've got nowhere to go - well there's no need for spends.

thankyouforthesun · 15/10/2022 09:00

Not that much right now tbh it feels like, but works out as more when we add it i up for husband's tax return as I usually sponsor people here and there for £20 when asked. My volunteering is limited to parkrun. We just give £10 a month to the air ambulance and occasionally put a bit into the food bank but now we get online deliveries we don't. I feel quite ashamed reading this back tbh as I know others do a lot more and this feels very tight.

Discovereads · 15/10/2022 09:04

Well we are quite poor but manage £10/month.
My DH also works for a charity (less pay than corporate work, but more satisfying).

iwillnotstaycalm · 15/10/2022 09:10

I can't afford to give money but I shop mostly in charity shops and also volunteer at a centre once a week

purpledagger · 15/10/2022 09:33

Not as much as a should.

i put money in the collection at church, i help out with the PTA, both in terms of time and donations, i make up charity shoe boxes for christmas and sometimes donate to a christmas toy appeal.

because it's not always a cash donation, i guess i don't regard it as donating to charity, but i suppose it is.

bananaboats · 15/10/2022 09:46

Nothing on a regular basis but will usually donate to a couple of this around Xmas

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 15/10/2022 09:53

10% of post-tax income (plus one-off odds and ends like sponsoring colleagues who are fundraising), plus I volunteer for a local charity which is about 4-5 hours a month.

Seeingadistance · 15/10/2022 10:04

10% of net income plus additional donations as and when.

C8H10N4O2 · 15/10/2022 10:13

Aim for approx 10% in cash or pro bono or both. As I've got older and better off I've done more pro bono type work on top. I don't claim tax back because I disagree with tax payers subsidising my donations.

I grew up poor, now I'm not. Its what I learned from family growing up - you do what you can even if its not much but it should be at least proportionate to what you have.

I find it its interesting that in contemporary UK much of the research on giving shows low income people give proportionately more than the better off.

riotlady · 15/10/2022 10:14

£20 a month on direct debit and if I ever have any “surprise” money (like a tax rebate) I usually try and give some to charity too

Mogginsthemog · 15/10/2022 11:17

I donate around £50 -£60 at around Xmas time. Sometimes will give a one off to the DEC if there is an appeal .

Used to have a dd set up for oxfam but stopped that when it all blew up about how dodgy some of their staff were. I won't set up any more dds , prefer to give one offs. Hate being stopped in the street and being asking to set up a dd.

Give and buy books/old toys etc to charity shops.

TravellingSpoon · 15/10/2022 11:43

£5 a month to a local charity that supports adults with LD.

£5 a month to our local children's hospice via their lottery.

I wish I could give more but I cant.

Panauchocolat25 · 15/10/2022 11:54

I give 5 a month to a charity that means something to me. If I could afford more I would.

HighlandPony · 15/10/2022 11:56

Not a penny. I give my time and my skills but not anything in monetary terms.

lljkk · 15/10/2022 11:56

£25/month by DD
£100 maybe once a year to food bank
Charity shop interactions
About 8 hours/week in my time...
This weekend is a bit nutty, including travel time (hours)
Friday: 4.5
Saturday 1.5 (+ planning time for Sunday & other)
Sunday: 3.5-4
Monday: 1.5

dinglethedragon · 15/10/2022 12:12

Just worked it out as a % of income and it's about 10%.

Centre point (working with vulnerable/homeless teens, have supported them for decades)
Refugee council (again, been doing that one for years)
Small local initiative where they asked for £3 month from 1000 people to help local homeless people get deposits, basic furniture etc, seems to work really well.
Monthly donation to the local food bank so they can buy the food needed (that's my biggest one atm)
Dogs trust, small monthly donation as I'm not able to take another rescue dog atm.
Ad hoc donations to a few, including an animal rescue that does wonders on a shoestring, Red Cross, DAC etc.

Have had to cancel quite a few as they tend to creep up on you, the odd £5 doesn't make much difference until you realise there are more of them than you remember doing.

Tomorrowisalatterday · 15/10/2022 12:14

About £400 a month between us. Exclusively to charities in the developing world as I think that has the most impact.

Babyroobs · 15/10/2022 12:31

Lottery for local hospice £5 a month
Sponser 3 dogs at Dogs trust so about £30 a month.
Donations as and when if there is a disaster.
Always try to sponser work colleagues etc.
Shop in charity shops a lot and give all my unused stuff to charity shops.

Discovereads · 15/10/2022 12:35

This is a really heartwarming thread. Thank you to everyone who donates to charity.

hellcatspangle · 15/10/2022 12:36

I don't pay any regular amounts but I always sponsor friends when they are fund raising (and it's a pretty regular thing!) I also give up a lot of my free time for one particular charity.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 15/10/2022 12:41

200 a month to wildlife / elephant protection and 100 a month to Medecins sans Frontiers.

LimpBiskit · 15/10/2022 13:20

About 5% income in cash terms and around 20hrs time a week

America12 · 15/10/2022 14:45

Items to food bank weekly. Regular donation to Refuge.

BHRK · 15/10/2022 14:47

£30 a month. Giving to others is important to me

MeowMeowPowerRangers · 15/10/2022 14:54

I don't donate monthly. I do it when I can.

I send so much to a orphanage in Uganda when I can for food.

I also shop in charity shops and donate a lot to them.
