Wedding present - what do people do these days?

Am going to a wedding in a few weeks. I’m a friend of the bride and it’s a hotel wedding and reception. They have lived together for a few years and have a one year old. I haven’t been to a wedding for ages. What do people do for wedding gifts these days? If it’s mainly money, what is the usual amount?

£50, assuming in UK. If in Ireland, about £8million.

Last few I’ve been to I’ve done the personalised gift thing. Photo frame with “mr & mrs whoever, 14th October 2022” sort of thing engraved on it.

I’ve been to a few weddings in recent years and I’ve only ever seen people leave cards (which I assume have money in), never a present. I’ve usually given £50 from our family to a close friend. I’d give less if it was a colleague or if I was an evening only guest.

Personally somewhere in the region of 20- 50 pounds depending on a variety of factors, would it be just from me, or my partner too; how much I've had to spend to attend, and how broke I'm feeling; that type of thing. You could go down the voucher for a restaurant they like route instead of money if you so wished, then it's thoughtful even if you can't afford a lot.

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 14/10/2022 21:38

Can't say I've been to too many but £50 for day, £20 for evening. I'd say most people leave money rather than gifts. If it was my best friend I'd probably do the £50 and then a small personal gift in the region of £10-20 as well

TheTeddyBears · 14/10/2022 21:48

If full day guest I would say around £100 or more if you can afford it and close to them. I've only ever given £50 for evening reception.

thecatsthecats · 14/10/2022 21:55

£20-30 evening guest.
£50 full day.
£70+ if it's someone we're close to.

And don't get something wedding gifty, and especially not personalised. Cash will help your friends pick something to treasure. An item will most likely... Not be something they love.

It's way more in some areas. Where I am in Ireland it's 90 euro a head for a wedding. Prices shot up after covid.

Slimjimtobe · 14/10/2022 23:29

90 a head is crazy isn’t it
we had ours nearly 13 years ago and it was 55 a head for 4 courses an petit fours (steak and salmon dinners)
