Received a text which just says “Test x”. Think I should ignore, but I’m so curious….

Number it’s sent from is visible, but not in my contacts. What are they testing? I suspect my gullibility.

Anyone else seen or heard of a scam that starts like this?

I mean, if it was someone I know checking they had my number right - they would put something like “Is that Puzzled? This is MyName”

OTOH, I did give my mobile number to someone today.

What would you do?

Who did you give your number to?

Lochjeda · 14/10/2022 18:29

Do you know anyone who has just gone abroad today and has maybe put an esim in their phone so you won't have their new number but they have yours stored in their phone?

TellMeWhere · 14/10/2022 18:30

Either someone's changed their number or it's the person you gave your number to.

You could just ask... :-/

TellMeWhere · 14/10/2022 18:32

Or it's crappy spam and you can block them.

PorkPieAndAPickledOnion · 14/10/2022 18:32

I once received a blank email with just the subject line: Testing Tesco scam.

They’re not always that bright.

RainingYetAgain · 14/10/2022 18:34

if you suspect a scam try putting the number into Google or a who called website

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 14/10/2022 18:34

What harm could come from replyng, you can block the number at any time

Useitorloseit · 14/10/2022 18:39

Save the number as a ? then open WhatsApp and look in your contacts for ? and see if there is a photo there if they do have WhatsApp.

Who did you give your number to?

Someone I know IRL who had a sensible reason for asking for it.

That doesn’t bring anything up

Surely it’s the person your gave your number to today testing that they copied the number down right. It feels like the logical explanation to me.

That doesn’t show anyone either

It does seem logical. Though if it were the other way round, I would send “This is Puzzled” rather than just “Test x”. I always find kisses on texts a bit weird unless it’s my nearest and dearest.

But said person is not the world’s most organised. The reason they wanted my number is because they were 45 minutes late for a meeting because they couldn’t understand the instructions about where we were meeting and want to avoid a repeat.

So I think I will reply. If it’s not them, I can always block the number.

Could it be someone you slept with suggesting you get a covid or STI test?

I thought the message was text {name of person} and you'd put x to be anonymous, was it actually a kiss 😂

WonderingWanda · 14/10/2022 18:58

I'd reply 'Failed!'

hubbs · 14/10/2022 18:58

Call it but add 141 before the number and see who answers . Your number will be withheld .

Ive tried that on my phone in the past and it doesn't work. I can't remember now why I needed to do I but I was annoyed to find it wouldnt let me

Hbh17 · 14/10/2022 19:04

Well, I never answer a call or te t from a number I don't recognise - it's just common sense. I may Google it to see if it's spam that I should block (it usually is).
Very occasionally, it may be a business or restaurant that I might have been dealing with, so I will save the number under their name.
If I still don't know, I might just block it anyway 😂

Pixiedust1234 · 14/10/2022 19:05

oh.... I thought the x was a name not a kiss. Now you have done the update I'm certain it was your new contact. They were making sure they had inputted the number correctly and didn't want it bouncing back as unavailable.

Just reply back Test has Failed.

PuzzledObserver · 14/10/2022 19:05

Panic over - it’s the person I gave my number to today. Thanks all.

whether it's common sense surely depends entirely on your situation

My ex BIL is a tradesman who gets business by advertising on facebook. He'd starve if he didn't answer unknown numbers
