I'll start by saying I have said a categoric no.

Of course DC hasn't seen the film but he's dug the mask out (it's an older cousins, not ours) as they have a dress up day next week.

I've told him to return it to his cousin, my sibling said let him wear it. 🙄

I'm right aren't I?

It's a scary ghost mask. It doesn't require any explanation beyond that. I can't really see the problem, but if you've already said no then that's fine, find something else.

It’s just a mask that looks like a ghost. They want the kids to dress up in Halloween costumes so some are going to be ‘scary’. Ghosts, zombies, skeletons, grim reaper, they’re all ‘scary looking’. He’ll have to take the mask off for most of the school day presumably, I’d have let my kids wear it at that age.

Have you thought about your costume yet? May I suggest you dress up as a fun sponge?

SwedishDentist · 14/10/2022 16:54

I agree with you OP. I think that mask is synonymous with something that goes beyond normal childhood Halloween "horror". And at Y5 he is at school with much younger children who will find it scary. TBH I don't really like any Halloween costumes that completely conceal the face. DD was not happy when she saw an older child turn up to school in full werewolf mask last year, when she was 4 and only just started reception.

As long as teachers aren't going to think it's inappropriate, then it saves me a few quid so all good.

Does the school even allow masks? Ours doesn't, which makes that sort of thing simpler. Cocid masks excepted!

SuzySangfroid · 14/10/2022 16:58

I think it's too creepy for primary school, even without the serial killer movie connection. Maybe it's that recent story where some absolute genius 🙄 decided to wear one to scare the nursery age children she looked after and she scared them a lot. They looked properly traumatised.

Remembering how my then 5 year old reacted when I put it on and she turned round and saw me, I would not let a child wear it in a school where there are children that young.

I hate how many younger children are obsessed with Ghostface since 5 came out, they think it's funny to wear them and pretend to stab each other, great parenting people are doing letting little kids pretend to be serial killers.
