DBS checks for teens?

My 17 year old DS has set himself up for individual tuition. However, my DH seems to think that under 18's cannot get a DBS check.

Does anyone know anything about this? My DS is looking to give 1-1 tuition, and he already has some interest. Of course, for his sake and the students, I want to make sure everyone is comfortable and all above board etc.

Anyone know anything about this, or have experience of their under 18 doing tutor work?

You can have a dbs from 16

He legally needs a DBS check if he is going to be a tutor.

DBS checks are done from 16 years old.

Will he be going to other people's homes or teaching out of your home? If he is teaching out of your home, everyone in your house will need a DBS check as well.

16 year old DD works for a tuition centre and she had to have a DBS.
Your main issues might be whether your DC has sufficient documentation. If he has a passport and a bank account you'll be ok - otherwise you might be scrabbling a bit.

I'm not sure this is true. In the past anyone could set themself up as a tutor - it's up to the parent/client to make appropriate safety checks surely? Has a law changed that I'm not aware of?

You can’t get a DBS check on yourself anyway - if he’s working for/with an agency then they should help him with it.

it’s not legally required if you’re just working for yourself - it’s a check for employers. Private tuition is not legally regulated.

NutbushShittyLimits · 14/10/2022 10:11

It will be private tuition, either in our home, or theirs.

He already does this line of work one day a week for a tuition centre, on their premises. They DBS checked him. He has set up his own website to do it privately (OK with centre) and has had interest already as this is quite a scarce skill in our town.

I just wanted to cover him, and make parents feel comfortable with him.

He has both of these and he is also on the national register of tutors for this subject.

Did he sign up to the DBS update service?

GiggleWhale · 14/10/2022 10:43

DBS is not worth the paper it is written on and most people are not acknowledging this. Proper references and worth a lot more than a DBS check (which pretty much is useless the next day anyway).

If he is doing individual tuition at someone else's house the best bet is to set himself up in a communal space - it's also advantageous as it helps students learn with distractions around them.

LIZS · 14/10/2022 10:44

Has he checked that he can do private tuition while employed by the centre?

GiggleWhale · 14/10/2022 10:54

If he has a DBS Check from the centre - then he can say he has one. He should have been provided with a copy of it.

KangarooKenny · 14/10/2022 10:55

Yes they can.

Has he checked that he can do private tuition while employed by the centre?

Yes, he can so long as he doesn't poach existing students.
