The word 'minging'

TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet · 14/10/2022 01:10

I love it, it's so descriptive. But as a non-Pom I need to check I'm pronouncing it properly before putting it into use. I embarrassed myself on my last trip to the UK by shopping at 'Preemark' Blush

Is it like whinging or singing?

Singing

InsertPunHere · 14/10/2022 01:13

Absolutely!

TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet · 14/10/2022 01:13

Well thank you, I am glad I asked because I'd assumed it was like 'minge'. Further embarrassment avoided!

" mingin' " you can't say it with conviction and sound out the last 'g'.

Me too!

Wisheverydaywasfriday · 14/10/2022 03:31

It’s pronounced ‘Preemark’ where I live 😃

ChagSameachDoreen · 14/10/2022 03:49

Minging rhymes with singing.

Brilliant word. I also like "hanging", as in "that's absolutely hanging." Same meaning.

Oh! Well I was sniggered at by my Prymark-going relative.

"Bogging" too!

I thought minging was a Scottish word same as hinging. Primark is definitely Preemark in west coast Scotland

Chocchops72 · 14/10/2022 05:31

Scottish here, school in Dundee.

we used minging, but ‘clamming’ / ‘clammin’ was probably said more .

summerorange · 14/10/2022 05:32

Same here Preemark 😁 and minging is such a good word reminds me of my school days - it's a word you can really stress

bumblebeessarecool · 14/10/2022 06:05

You forgot about 'ye wee minger' as an insult. Said with conviction its a great insult.

girlmom21 · 14/10/2022 06:06

Definitely Pry-mark here - otherwise 'Primarni' wouldn't work Grin

StandardLampski · 14/10/2022 06:36

Pree - mark here too 😊

JenniferBarkley · 14/10/2022 06:52

Preemark is fine - but really it's Penney's Grin

Pemba · 14/10/2022 07:01

Your relative is out of order for sniggering at your 'Pree-mark' pronunciation, it's a perfectly valid one and they pronounce it that way in lots of areas I believe. Unsure how they pronounce it in Ireland, where the store originated? That would be the definitive way I suppose.

Brits do tend to be quite rigid about what they consider the right way to say things, often not taking into account the origins of a word or brand name and pronouncing the word by following English language rules. For example they will say Nike to rhyme with Mike when it should be nye-kee, and pronounce Porsche as 'porsh' one syllable when of course it's German and should be more 'Por-sha'.

Mamadothehump · 14/10/2022 07:06

Minging like singing but like a pp said - don't sound the last 'g'.
Minge is a fanny!!

DodgyLeftLeg · 14/10/2022 07:13

This

Mingin’ like Singin’ in the Rain 🎵

Thack · 14/10/2022 07:28

I've not he this word in years thank you! Definitely "ming" to start the word. I'd also not pronounce the last g.

It's priy-mark for me. Someone once told me that they worked in one years ago and were told that it's 'prim-ark' because everything should be prim and proper. Maybe that was just their manager trying to encourage neatness?!

A-did-as vs A-deed-as anyone? I grew up with the latter.

It's 'Preemark' where I live now but 'Prymark' in some areas, so you haven't embarrassed yourself at all, OP.

Ship · 14/10/2022 07:33

It’s pr eye mark where I live not preeemark

minging is pronounced Mingin like singin’

also rank is another good word. That is proper rank.

Dinoteeth · 14/10/2022 07:35

I thought mingin' minger (someone who mings) were both Glasgow / West Scotland words.

Are they used in parts of England too?

ironingboredrefusal · 14/10/2022 07:37

Although the word minging derives from the word minge (and therefore suggests that vulvas are disgusting...) it rhymes with singing.
