Sleepy 4 day old?

Baby is 4 days old now. My first was ages ago and I can’t remember what’s normal.

Home from hospital on day 2 and spent all evening cluster feeding. Yesterday slept through the day with a few periods of waking and nursing. My milk was in by evening, and she nursed nearly every hour.

today been sleepy, waking every 3 hours or so and nursing but generally drowsy, not fully emptying my breast (I tend to have oversupply). She rouses when I change her and cries with nappies, etc. Is this normal? Has she just got her night and day mixed up?

Babies sleep a lot, routine take a while. Sounds fine to me but obviously check with midwife if you’re concerned

Totally normal in my limited experience of newborns. If it reassures you, keep a diary of her sleep/awake windows and you should slowly see the awake windows extend over the next few weeks. She doesn’t really have any concept of date or night yet, that will also take time to establish.

I think you just forget how much newborns sleep. I had DD2 3mo ago and I'd totally forgotten, but she was awake maybe three hours in a day max for the first couple of weeks! She basically just fed and slept.

And yes totally normal for them to be more wakeful overnight during day, especially when breastfeeding as supply is at its highest overnight so they want to feed feed feed.

Yes completely normal OP!

I was told to feed every 3 hours, from start of feed one feed to the start of the next until they maintain/regain birth weight.

If you are at all concerned you should ring the maternity ward.

if you are at all concerned or watchful about it I would call your midwife.

none of us can see your baby and for me there is a difference between drowsy and asleep. With my third he was a bit like this and turned out his blood sugars were a little low when they were checked. His feeding was ok and his nappies weren’t dry either.

I’m quite sure all the other posters are right but I don’t think there’s is any harm is getting her checked.

Thank you all. Midwife was here yesterday and said she was doing well, and we’ve got another review day after tomorrow. She’s been back to being more alert since I posted so I reckon I’m just over worrying! (DH also says our first was the same, I just don’t recall much as we had a three day labour and I was knackered for the first several days after!)

Was she early? My early babies were very sleepy till their due date.

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 13/10/2022 22:21

@beccahamlet no, full term. ELCS

I remember DD always being sleepy and me having to constantly wake her up for feeds. I thought there was something wrong with her! But it’s just what newborns are like. Now she’s at that age where she’ll soon drop naps entirely and that’s a whole different ball game! 😐

CatchMeIfYouCanCan · 13/10/2022 22:45

My newborn was very sleepy and more so than her older sister, she had very bad jaundice but it would be picked up by your midwife and you can tell by their skin tone but maybe worth asking your midwife to check at the next check up.
