It's been in the fridge since being delivered Sunday and "use by" date was yesterday (not best before). Would you eat this?

I was planning on slow cooker chilli to feed me and also my toddler... 🙈

if it looks and smells ok then yes I would use it

Bobbybobbins · 13/10/2022 12:14

Yes definitely

NightmareSlashDelightful · 13/10/2022 12:14

I'd give it the sniff but yes, I would (and have)

Chicken and fish I'm more cautious about

If it looks and smells ok, absolutely!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 13/10/2022 12:14

Yes if it smells fine....

AquaticSewingMachine · 13/10/2022 12:15

Yes, of course, assuming it smelled and looked fine. You don't need "use by" dates on meat if you have working eyes and nose.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 13/10/2022 12:15

Yes

Threadkillacilla · 13/10/2022 12:16

Yes.

PeppaPigsBonnet · 13/10/2022 12:16

Yes

Dinoteeth · 13/10/2022 12:17

Yes, it's not going to suddenly go of like Cinderellas carriage at midnight.

StarDolphins · 13/10/2022 12:18

If it was from Aldi, no. Elsewhere, yes if it smells ok!

Gooseysgirl · 13/10/2022 12:18

Yes... tends to last better than chicken IMHO, I nearly always freeze chicken the day I buy it or use straight away.

KangarooKenny · 13/10/2022 12:20

Sniff it and decide, if it doesn’t smell I’d use it.

StillNotWarm · 13/10/2022 12:32

If it smells normal, and looks normal, yes I would.

Summertimesunshineandfizz · 13/10/2022 12:33

Yes

B1pbop · 13/10/2022 12:34

Yes as long as it smells fresh, still looks an healthy pinkish red, and the packet hasn’t bubbled with air.

caringcarer · 13/10/2022 12:35

If it does not smell bad, yes I would eat it. I'd not eat chicken out of date though.

peridito · 13/10/2022 12:36

It might smell a little "old" what with the blood an all .But don't let that put you off - onions ,garlic ,pepper .,bay leaves .It's not going to poison you .

AffIt · 13/10/2022 12:54

Yes.

When I first met my OH, he was utterly paranoid about use by dates (I liked a PP's description - as if by magic, the food would suddenly, like Cinderella's coach turning into a pumpkin, go off at midnight).

I am considerably more laissez-faire, reassuring myself that I am the descendant of thousands of generations of people who have managed to use their senses of sight and smell and have come through unscathed. I've been fine for most of my 43 years.

I wouldn't fuck with chicken or pate (although I don't eat meat these days) or shellfish, though.

LT2 · 13/10/2022 13:01

Yes.

starfishmummy · 13/10/2022 13:04

Yes but I'd make sure to give it a good boil so I'd cook in a pan, not put it in the slow cooker.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 13/10/2022 13:05

Yes I would providing the top of the pack hasn't "blown"

TimetoGoTed · 13/10/2022 13:10

Ok thanks! I've used it! I seared it quickly and then transferred to slow cooker to make the chilli. It actually smelt normal so should be fine!
