I skived off school to watch them raise the Mary Rose.

I've name changed because I've been talking about this in real life.

Mary Rose fans, the museum is excellent. My primary school aged kids loved it and it's v interesting for grown ups too. They have displays of all the stuff from inside the ship and explain what it tells us about Tudor life.

I also remember watching this on TV at school. Really exciting and fascinating.

Flev · 12/10/2022 16:32

I was on the beach in Portsmouth watching as a 4yr old - had the morning off nursery school and then went back to my grant's house to watch it again on TV. I then got completely obsessed by it and insisted on taking every visitor to see it whilst I was growing up. It was amazing to go back a few years ago and see it without the spray and up the right way!

YennefersDress · 12/10/2022 16:42

I'm 34 so obviously didn't watch 😁 but I love medieval and Tudor history and Suzannah Lipscomb has recently done several really good podcasts on the Mary Rose, as part of the Not Just The Tudors Podcast- really interesting to listen to. I remember going to see the Victory as a child. I'd love to go see the new Mary Rose exhibition.

There was a documentary on channel 4 on Sunday looking at the behind the scenes of the raising (including archaeologists and the royal engineers not seeing eye to eye!). It is available on the channel 4 catch up and is being repeated on Saturday I believe.

The museum is way different now than even five years ago and constantly evolving with various exhibition rooms. You can also now get a few views of the 'other' side of the wreck ie the outside of the hull. I believe they have some new stuff planned for next year but don't know exactly what. And there is new research being down like their Many Faces of the Mary Rose project that used DNA analysis to look at where the crew members were born and grew up. And if you use Twitter, they have quite a good social media account as far as museum accounts go.

OMG! This thread has confirmed that DH and I are ancient.

I clearly remember watching this on my day off - well beyond school.😂

@raisethemaryrose I also skived off school to go down to the sea front to watch it being raised - perhaps we were at the same school? I also volunteered at the project through my later school years. I remember that when the museum first opened to the public the ship was lying in the dock being sprayed - you have to go through a pair of double doors (airlock) and climb a metal gantry above the ship. It took people ages to grasp what they were looking at as the ship was at an angle of 45 degrees with the deck supports sticking upwards. It was also freezing in the museum - fine in the summer but not so much fun in the winter.

The most fun bit was that even at that stage the archaeological team were really interested in the nitty gritty of the sailors lives - what food they ate, what parasites lived on and in them etc.

AnApparitionQuipped · 12/10/2022 17:33

I'm surprised that children in Portsmouth had to skive to see it, whereas my school which was nowhere near Portsmouth and about as inland and non-seafaring as you can get, let us watch the momentous event on telly!

dudsville · 12/10/2022 17:36

40 yrs! I think i saw the exhibition about 30, 31 years ago. My goodness.

Runnerduck34 · 12/10/2022 17:50

I skived off school to see it raised too!
It was so exciting.
I saw it at Portsmouth dockyard a couple of years ago, it's a great exhibition
40 years ago! Are you sure? Makes me feel old.

conkercollector · 12/10/2022 17:52

I only vaguely remember it but the Historic Dockyard is a fantastic day out. It takes more than a day really but your ticket is valid for a year.

FleeUpFreeTime · 12/10/2022 17:55

I was 9 and we watched in the top hall. I can’t remember what I did yesterday but I remember watching that and we watched Thriller when it first came out. Imagine the risk assessment today!!!

LearnerCook · 12/10/2022 17:56

It really was quite something to see, wasn't it. I remember being transfixed.
Similarly, just a couple of years later, when it was announced that the wreck of the RMS Titanic had been located.

Parrotpretty · 12/10/2022 18:02

Was she named after Henry 8th sister?

terrywynne · 12/10/2022 18:03

And they found Shackleton's ship earlier this year. The images of that are eerie like the Titanic footage (don't think there are any plans to raise her in Antarctica!)

terrywynne · 12/10/2022 18:04

Parrotpretty · 12/10/2022 18:02

Was she named after Henry 8th sister?

That's a myth. She was a sister ship to the Peter Pomegranate. The names are most likely for St Peter and St Mary the Virgin with the pomegranate for Catherine of Aragon and the Tudor Rose for Henry 8.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/10/2022 18:06

Another one here who remembers the TV (on a trolley) being set up in our classroom for us to watch it.

megletthesecond · 12/10/2022 18:08

The new museum is stunning. We went a couple of years ago. You feel dwarfed by the boat.
