Has anyone caved and put the heating on?

I get that not everyone can - or should - try to manage without. But I’m among those who want- need really - to try to manage without as long as possible. We are middle aged and grown up kids have flown the nest now and it’s not going to kill us to be a bit chilly and sling on an extra jumper. Reason being of course, that our British Gas direct debit has QUADRUPLED from this month 😮.. I know we are not alone.

Had been doing ok but God tonight it’s so bloody cold! I’m having a bath rather than a shower just to warm up! (I know that costs more than a shower in itself).

I’m working from home some days and seeing my colleagues appear on Teams wrapped in their dressing gowns because they’re doing the same!

Goodness knows how we coped when I was a kid, in our house with one coal fire that used to heat the water too (if we were lucky) and had ice climbing up the insides of the window. I’ve definitely gone soft since then!

Am thinking of buying one of these oil filled radiators.. but doesn’t help that downstairs is so open plan. I’m laying in the bath now and it’s the first time I’ve felt warm all day. Am tempted to rip the HRT patch off my arse at bedtime in hopes of inciting a hot flush! Not really

I’ve dug put my reindeer onesie for when I get out of this bath!

How is everyone else fairing?

Not yet…but we have been putting the woodburner on in the evening if it’s cold for an hour or two. The chimney goes through both our DC’s rooms, so keeps them toasty as well.

4 months worth of logs was half the cost of a monthly electricity bill…crazy.

ClaudineClare · 11/10/2022 22:25

Yes. Last couple of days just an hour in the evening and an hour this morning. Makes a huge difference and also I don't want the house to get damp. Will keep an eye on how much it is costing, but reckon about £1:50 an hour 🤯

XenoBitch · 11/10/2022 22:27

I used to have heating set to 18, and it would be on right now. It is now set to frost protection setting.. so it wont come on now until I can see my breath.
I am ok, can layer up. It is my pets I worry about more.

Minniem2020 · 11/10/2022 22:32

I put ours on around 430 today as it had gone really chilly. We have a small child and a baby though so I'm conscious about keeping them warm. We haven't needed it on in the mornings yet.

LovinglifeAF · 11/10/2022 22:33

Yes, I’m not willing for my house to be cold and to be miserable and uncomfortable . I’ve got a good energy deal and lots of credit built up thankfully

mondaytosunday · 11/10/2022 22:35

One day last week, but I have a gas fire on tonight!

MrsGamgee · 11/10/2022 22:45

No heating yet but I'm spending every moment I can under my furry heated throw. It's bloody lovely!

DoingJustFine · 11/10/2022 22:51

Is it cheaper to have a small oil-filled radiator on in one room, than the heating? I lost my IHU thing that tells you how much electricity you're using so I can't tell. The radiator thing is 1.5KW

theremustonlybeone · 11/10/2022 22:53

Putting it for an hour in the morning and hour at night. I have found my energy usage has markedly reduced by turning the temperature down on the boiler and cutting down the time.

hattie43 · 11/10/2022 22:53

Not yet but I'm in the SE and it's mild with the sun that's been out .
When needed the heating will go on as I have dogs to keep warm and it's bloody miserable all around when you're cold .
The dogs do have jumpers though so I'm sure we'll all layer up as needed but the heating will definitely be on particularly Nov onwards .

DoingJustFine · 11/10/2022 22:53

And yes, I caved this afternoon and put it on, and only turned radiators on in the fitting room and DS's bedroom. But we'd forgotten how the timer control thing worked and DH got it up to 29.5 degrees for a while by accident. Proper tropical!

I'm also closing doors to the rooms, which realllllllly helps. And I hung a curtain up in front of our glass front door.

FunnysInLaJardin · 11/10/2022 22:58

No, but its still 19.5 inside here in the very south

ClaudineClare · 11/10/2022 23:01

Can someone cleverer explain why 16 degrees inside the house feels so much colder that 16 degrees outside does?

Begoniasforever · 11/10/2022 23:04

Yes I put the heating on but I’m careful with it, I use the log burner mainly but put it on periodically if required,

I think even if your costs did quadruple, which is not really the case, you could still have it on for a quarter of the time you used to.

That will cost abt 51p per hour ( if yiu are on svr) so possibly cheaper than turning the central heating on?

It would feel just as cold outside if you just went and sat there. Outside you’re moving around doing stuff, not sitting watching the telly, trying to sleep or whatever.

Oh that is true and very obvious! I thought there might be some fancy scientific explanation. I am so dense sometimes!😅

TheWolves · 11/10/2022 23:11

I think my house is made from bricks brought up from hell. Definitely don't need the heating on.

Has anyone caved and put the heating on?
BitOutOfPractice · 11/10/2022 23:11

I’ve just been thinking that the big move to open plan living over the last ten years is going to give people some very big, expensive spaces to heat.

I’ve not had it on yet. It’s been 18° here today in Essex and I live in a flat that is well insulated with flats either side and above and below. That helps.

wishing everyone a cosy night

LesOliviers · 11/10/2022 23:13

I have done at the weekends. We need the heating on to get the laundry dry as we don't have a tumble dryer.

CoffeeIsForClosers · 11/10/2022 23:14

As someone who loves the cold, I've obviously moved to the wrong part of the country. It's mild here. A couple of slightly fresh days in late Sept and now back to this bloody mild meh again.

tillyandmilly · 11/10/2022 23:15

Bit nippy here in south east but I just put a thick dressing gown on and fluffy slipper boots and i am rather toasty - we are only going to put the heating on if there is snow outside!

FoxCorner · 11/10/2022 23:20

It's going down to 4 degrees where I am tonight. (South of London)

PeloFondo · 11/10/2022 23:22

I put it on briefly earlier. For the cat Blush

Has anyone caved and put the heating on?
Moonchild18 · 11/10/2022 23:24

I had had it on a few times, mainly in a morning just to take the edge off so the kids are more willing to get up and get dressed for school 😏
