I turned down socialising tonight to get in to bed early and read and it's glorious

Some friends are meeting in our local pub tonight and asked us to go along, and apparently I'm old and boring for saying no thank you, I want an early night.

Seriously, we're all late 30s, I don't want to go out drinking on a Tuesday night! I've just got into bed with my kindle, DH is in the bath, and I'm enjoying some lovely cozy silence.

I'm not sure if I'm old before my time, but a night out once a fortnight/month is plenty for me, but some of our friends seem quite put out by it as if we're letting them down. I'm 38, it's dark outside, it's the middle of the work week, and I'm very happy to be in bed before 9pm.

Are other 30 somethings still going to the pub a couple nights a week? To be fair most of our friends are child free, but I'm hitting an age where I don't want to spend money on sitting in the pub, around noise and booze.

Is it hopelessly boring to be in bed with a book at this time of night on a Tuesday?

I do a mix of the two, some weeks I'm out 2 / 3 nights, more in the summer. In winter I'm much more likely to be curled up with a book

LobeliaBaggins · 11/10/2022 20:36

Not at all unreasonable, but may I be nosy and ask what you are reading? I seem to have lost my reading mojo. Need something I can't put down.

Brieeeeeeeee · 11/10/2022 20:37

YANBU! I’m not in bed but I am curled on the sofa. I do like going out but it has to be straight from work if it’s during the week.

SummerHouse · 11/10/2022 20:39

I also need to know what you are reading (apart from Mumsnet 😁)

NotRightNowNo · 11/10/2022 20:44

I'm on my way to bed just now, electric blanket and book. Can't wait.

Bonnieblueeyes · 11/10/2022 20:48

This sounds amazing and now my DD is asleep I'm heading to bed to do the same while DH plays Gran Turismo!

A night out once a month for dinner with friends is enough for me, if I'm drinking I need the month to recover anyway Grin

FeelingDecidedlyGiddy · 11/10/2022 20:55

Sensible! Weeknights are perfect for this. As are most nights, tbf, especially in winter.

motleymop · 11/10/2022 20:55

Absolutely not! I could go completely wild at the weekends in my late 30s, but despised going out in the week and avoided it unless completely necessary (thankfully rare occasions).

In bed right now with my Kindle, a cup of tea and a packet of Miller's Toast Plum and Date toasts to snack on. I'm reading Baby Dear and it's very good 😊

Singleandproud · 11/10/2022 21:00

I'm 36, DD is still recoving from a bad cold and chest infection so no waiting around at rugby training tonight.

We had an early dinner, then I got showered and into some cosy new PJs by 6 and curled up on the sofa with a book DD bought for my birthday last month, a hot drink and a cat, absolute bliss.

PermanentTemporary · 11/10/2022 21:02

YANBU. I'm in bed with William Boyd's Waiting for Sunrise. So far it's superb but I'm not sure where it's going. I know where I'm staying though 🛌

catandcoffee · 11/10/2022 21:05

Sound pure bliss OP.

fuckinghorgel · 11/10/2022 21:09

Excellent, good to know I'm not a prematurely old bore. I love getting into bed early with a book when it's dark out.

I'm just finishing The Wonder - www.waterstones.com/book/the-wonder/emma-donoghue/9781509818402

Anyone read it?

Not boring at all. I'm 40 and currently in bed all comfy scrolling through Mumsnet

I have! It's great. Though not a cheery read. I think the movie of the book is now out.

Singleandproud · 11/10/2022 21:12

The book DD bought me was Terry Prachetts Wyrd Sisters, I've never really read any of his books before apart from Good Omens which I loved and she knows I love witchy things.

BrandyandGinger · 11/10/2022 21:12

The Wonder is amazing, it's definitely gripping enough to keep you at home from the pub.

@PermanentTemporary

I really loved that book!

Doublevodka · 11/10/2022 21:14

You have JOMO (joy of missing out) It happens to many of us over 30 😊

FeralWitch · 11/10/2022 21:18

I’ve just climbed into the bath with vol 1 of We All Hear Stories In The Dark - a kind of spooky Choose Your Own Adventure for grown-ups.

Why would I want to be anywhere else?

Snoken · 11/10/2022 21:23

I think it’s fine as long as you do other things with your friends and not just see them once a month. I think maintaining friendships is equally as important as any other relationship.
