So nuclear war is actually being voiced?

I hadn't before now, heard anyone say anything about it in black and white with the actual words 'nuclear war'

But NATO are addressing Russian now on the radio and he's just said 'Nuclear war cannot be won' etc

It's terrifying. Talk about keeping close eyes on Russians nuclear position wtf Sad

But what about the radioactive cloud etc that could spread over Russia if he strikes Ukraine with nuclear bomb? Putin must be aware what possible danger that might be for him and Russia? Have you seen the map how the cloud from Chernobyl disaster drifted from Ukraine down to Mediterranean, up through Italy, then as far west as Ireland and north over Sweden? Of course there were no disasters from that cloud then but how far and how dangerous would the fall out be from a nuclear strike on Ukraine now? But he surely will not strike a nuclear attack on any Nato countries (further away from Russia) at this stage?

It won’t be an issue for him . He’s well aware of his age and (supposed) Ill health . He also probably has total confidence in his bunker to keep him safe for the rest of his days 😞

Hello OP, we are really sorry to hear that news about the war in Ukraine has left you feeling so low. It's certainly very hard to read the news right now and it's understandable if news updates are having an impact on people's mental health.

With that in mind, we hope you don't mind, but when these threads are flagged up to us we usually add a link to our Mental Health resources.

You can also go to the Samaritans website, or email them on [email protected]. Support from other Mumsnetters is great and we really hope you will be able to take some comfort from your fellow posters, but as other MNers will tell you, it's really a good idea to seek RL help and support as well.

We also like to remind everyone that, although we're awed daily by the astonishing support our members give each other through life's trickier twists and turns, we'd always caution anyone never to give more of themselves to another poster, emotionally or financially, than they can afford to spare.

We would usually move a thread like this over to our Mental Health topic but we're happy to leave this in Chat for now.

For the same reason we didn't let Hitler take over Europe, and so on- because the people living there deserve their own freedom and their own country without being invaded?

DinosaurOfFire · 11/10/2022 15:37

Ah I have just seen the thread has moved on. I hope you have someone to speak to in rl, OP, and can get some help for your worries.

It is safer to talk about it than not to talk about it, in terms of global security/war studies - I don't mean us talking individually, I mean countries, heads of state etc. Secrecy around it raises the danger. In order for deterrence to work, you must make it clear that you possess them and could possibly use them.

As long as you know your enemy's position on the use, you are safer than not knowing (this is why arguably the North Korea situation is less dangerous as there's no ambiguity - Kim Jong Un has explicity said he wants to create nuclear missiles, so there's a clear threat that will dissuade anyone from attacking his country. If he was secret about them/ambiguous as to when he would use them, the threat would hold no power, and arguably he is more dangerous as a rogue agent than a known quantity).

If anyone wants to know more BTW I recommend people like James M Acton or other policy bods who know a lot more and tend to be far more rational than grabbing headlines or tabloids, or people on Twitter wildly speculating when they haven't studied war policy or nuclear doctrines.

@changeisuponthem What do you mean, "why can't we let them have Ukraine"? It's not ours to give away. Consider what Ukrainians are going through.

I firmly believe the Ukrainians are fighting a war for all of us. Their deaths are sparing ours.
putin won’t stop with Ukraine. We cannot get more involved as it will end with nuclear and all out world war.
so, for now. Ukraines are taking our bullets

Talk about keeping close eyes on Russians nuclear position wtf

But we do that all the time anyway, keep close eyes on Russians nuclear position, even during more peaceful times. Just as they keep a close eye on us and every other nuclear armed country.

It's such a scary time. I recently made the mistake of watching 'Where the wind blows'

I regret it!

That film is terrifying regardless of when you are watching it.

Start with avoiding the news. My anxiety was so bad back in Feb, I struggled to walk. If you do follow the news, words like "nuclear war" comes up a lot anyway. Try not to read too much into it.
Also remember that scary headlines gets all the clicks, and people reading articles. That is what the news orgs want.. they want clicks and engagement.

I am sorry to hear you are struggling. I get it. Try and just carry on with day to day things, avoid the news (or if you want to touch base, maybe look once a day), fill your day up with things you like to do.
