I often see this recommended on here to deal with situational anxiety and wonder how do you get it? Do you just ask your gp for some? I have a couple of interviews coming up and wonder whether this would help as my nerves always make me perform badly in interviews. Last time I phoned my gp about some driving anxiety I was having following a crash and they recommended a mindfulness book so think they may do the same?!

If you do get it then take a trial run before your interview.

I was given it once and it made me horribly ill.

You don't get prescribed it because you get nervous about every day things that you're supposed to get nervous about.

You get it if you have debilitating anxiety.

I take it for things like job interviews, giving lectures etc. Also for my grade 3 piano recently 😁 Works a treat for me, although I'm never sure how much is the effect of the drug and how much is placebo.

Agree with PP that you should try it first.

That's what I thought. But often when someone says about being nervous about making a speech or a driving test I see it being recommended. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone at all.

You can buy it online from a pharmacy for situational anxiety. I bought some for an interview a month ago. It is emphasised, though, that it is specifically for situational anxiety rather than regular use - if it's a situation you're facing often then it's a better idea to speak to your GP. Hope this helps. Smile

I’ve been on this for about 4 years - agree with a pp that it is for severe anxiety rather than a quick fix for general nerves over a specific issue that you wouldn’t face every day.

I couldn’t face life when I was prescribed it - it enabled me to start putting one foot in front of the other again…

I was prescribed it for situational anxiety. Was completely honest with my doctor (I lecture as part of my work and always get nervous) and she had no issue prescribing it at all.

I6344 · 11/10/2022 14:05

I'm on it but it's not helped with my anxiety one bit. I do take it more for my migraines though (as well as lots of other meds for my MS)

CaitoftheCantii · 11/10/2022 14:08

My DH gets situational anxiety- he was prescribed citalapram (sp?) and takes a low dose. I started on this but quickly was on the maximum dose and was switched to propranolol…

the side effects are grim, but my anxiety without it is grimmer…

Notmenottodaynotever · 11/10/2022 14:11

I asked for it for public speaking after seeing it recommended on here. It's not a daily anxiety medication I don't think?
I don't see why you couldn't get it for an interview. But do try it first

CaitoftheCantii · 11/10/2022 14:34

@FreyaHazel can so ask where online you bought propranolol as the online pharmacies I’ve looked at say it’s prescription only…

FreyaHazel · 11/10/2022 14:37

@CaitoftheCantii Google 'propranolol buy online' - lots of different online pharmacies come up. It is prescription only - you fill out your details and a pharmacist does an online consult, then prescribe it to you.

Pinkmagic1 · 11/10/2022 14:42

I have been prescribed it in the past for situational anxiety with no issue and personally find it excellent. It really does take the edge of the nerves and stops the sweating and shaking that it can cause.

bravelittletiger · 11/10/2022 14:43

People saying it isn't for situational anxiety are completely wrong sorry. It's one of the main uses of it. I take it for exactly that and occasionally for more general anxiety and it is a game change for me. It stops the hammering heart and other physical symptoms of anxiety which often make me avoid a situation completely.

bravelittletiger · 11/10/2022 14:44

But to your question of how you get it- your GP...mine was happy to prescribe it when I asked for it to deal with specific work related anxiety.

CaitoftheCantii · 11/10/2022 21:55

Thanks @FreyaHazel - I get anxiety at the thought of running out of them (!) so this is good to know
