Would living near this concern you...

I am looking for a place to rent and two doors down I spotted this sort of electric hub thing. Would it bother you regarding potential health impacts on children or am I worrying over nothing? Thanks so much, I'm a single mum and have nobody to really bounce this off. Picture attached

I've never heard of any 'potential health impacts' from those small utility installations.Confused

BigBunkers · 11/10/2022 13:02

It’s an electric substation, no I wouldn’t be concerned

Atmywitsend29 · 11/10/2022 13:03

There are no health implications unless your kids don't heed the "do not enter" warnings.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 11/10/2022 13:08

I used to live in street that had one of those at the bottom, no one ever mentioned it being an issue

GlassOuijan · 11/10/2022 13:11

I had heard of a potential health risk, so when we were looking to buy a house next to a substation, so we cantacted the electricity people who reassured us that the EMF emitted was very low and no risk to nearby houses.

I guess they would say that, though!

My own research led me to believe that it's best to live 100+ metres away from one. That said, any risk is small and if you're not planning on living somewhere forever, then its probably one worth taking.

wildery · 11/10/2022 13:47

I decided not to buy a house based on one of these being across the road. You'll find all sorts of scary info on Google - I'm not saying it's correct, but I'm a worrier and it would have played on my mind. I ran it past some friends and most said they'd be fine with it, but some wouldn't. I did loads of research at the time too. They are basically everywhere, and you might live very near one without even
knowing it (if it was hidden). The problem was, I would know about it, and it was very close. I don't believe there's a huge health risk, but if you're the sort of person who will be worrying about it, that's probably a bigger health risk in itself. For me, peace of mind (however misguided) was important and I suspect the fact you've posted means you might be happier elsewhere!

Thank you so much everyone. I'm so grateful for all of your responses, I'm viewing the property tomorrow so will see if that helps how I feel. Many thanks

I grew up next door to one of these, my parents still live there. No impact as far as any of us can tell.

eatyourcrustspls · 11/10/2022 13:58

I nearly bought a house near a huge pylon but after a lot of research pulled out. I also viewed a house with a substation and didn't proceed due to these concerns.

EndlessMagpies · 11/10/2022 14:00

They do have a tendency to hum a bit in wet weather, especially if it is misty or foggy. Having said that, NDNs have one at the bottom of their garden and we rarely hear anything at all.

Chewbecca · 11/10/2022 14:01

They’re on almost every street (on my estate at least) so it is quite hard to be too far away from one.

Anonymouslyposting · 11/10/2022 14:11

No, it wouldn’t worry me, a family member has one at the back of her (small) garden. We looked into it when she moved in as she has young kids and couldn’t find anything solid indicating a health risk.

NCer1001 · 11/10/2022 14:15

Before even opening I knew what this would be. Yes, I've heard of potential health risks and personally have been put off them in the past and probably would be in the future.

Could be completely wrong though!

OneDayAtATimePlease · 11/10/2022 14:18

Short answer, it wouldn't put me off at all.

Long answer, my great aunty has one in her garden. She's lived in her house for over 60 years and is a healthy 90 something year old.

No noticeable noise pollution, the only thing that happens is once in a while someone comes to inspect it.

These substations are everywhere (and are rather well disguised) because it's how the electricity gets stepped down from the high voltage stuff on the grid. Electricity loses voltage the more it travels so these need to be pretty close to the end users to be effective.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 11/10/2022 14:20

It's an electrical sub-station. What 'health concerns' about it do you have? Utterly ridiculous. They are everywhere.

VioletInsolence · 11/10/2022 14:24

I lived next door to one of these for sixteen years. I don’t worry about it much and I’m a big worrier.

I lived fairly close to a very large substation for a year (which I think was for the whole city and which has now been hidden in a building). I wouldn’t have wanted to stay there any longer than that.

starfishmummy · 11/10/2022 14:44

They're the price we have to pay for wanting electricity in our homes.

Mochudubh · 11/10/2022 14:56

I used to live in a house that had one of these the other side of the back fence, lived there for about 6 years and never bothered us.

perseverence · 11/10/2022 15:18

It depends.
We live near a larger sub station currently (soon to move out).

I won't miss the noise (humming ALL of the time) which is particularly obvious when it's hot and you can't close the windows.

That station is bigger though. No, if i had a choice I wouldn't choose to live near one, small or larger.

I don't mind the noise of trains - but it is apparently the transformers - complained they measured the noices levels and it is above permitted levels but was a struggle which in daily life is best avoided.

LazyJayne · 11/10/2022 15:21

I once lived by a very hummy one of those. Hummed 24/7

Giggorata · 11/10/2022 15:31

I live near one. It has a brick wall round it and it does emit a low hum sometimes. It doesn't bother me and I know of no research which indicates it is a health risk, no more so than the wiring in the house, anyway.
