I think all school children should get free school meals. It isn't their fault that their parents may be struggling financially and just having one proper meal a day makes such a huge difference to children's outcomes including helping them out of poverty.

I read once that more money gets spent on food for people in prisons than growing children. I'm not suggesting we starve criminals but it is shocking that we are not looking after the countries children.

@00100001 , who is JM?

Jack Monroe I think

paintitallover · 11/10/2022 13:38

The thing is, pay for children to eat now, or pay for crime in some cases, and later healthcare, for them. That's the reality in some cases. And anyone able to think knows that the parents of some children can't pay whether they want to or not.

I listened to him on Radio 4 this morning.

Totally agree OP. Whatever people think about ‘Jamie the chef and his cookbooks’, he has spent more time in schools and researching the statistics around food and poverty than any politician.

I thought he came across very well and more people should be aware the threshold for free school meals is £7.5k I think ie. most people receiving benefits will not qualify.

I have, but when the link matches the text shown and you can see that the format matches what you would expect and it's within a thread forum, I think the risk is low.

If I emailed you and said 'click on radio4.spammylink' and I'll give you some money, I'd expect you to not want to do it, but that's not where we are here.

But when I'm reading on my phone, using a browser it's not easy to see where the link is going

Surely when people have children they realise they're going to have to feed them perhaps they didnt realise their rent would end up being 60% of their take home salary, or their public sector job wouldnt increase wages with the cost of living.
Why didnt all the sodding baby boomers realise they would have to pay for their own social care once old. Sorry but the only people that suffer when you use the argument, "your child, your problem" is innocent children!

👏👏👏 hear, hear.

I fully realised I’d have to feed my child and take responsibility to work full time and things are still tight. I didn’t plan on my H fucking off and committing suicide without checking we had plenty of life insurance in place first. Fucking Tories don’t understand life AT ALL.

IloveJudgeJudy · 11/10/2022 16:04

I'm just wondering how it would work? As I understand it, meals at schools in Europe are set; the children don't have a choice; they eat what's offered.

Karrots · 11/10/2022 16:31

@IloveJudgeJudy

Thats exactly how it is as my DC (state) primary. There is more than 1 main to cater for veggies etc. but there is a limited menu on a rolling 3-4 week basis. You can only take packed lunch if the child eats offsite.

There's nothing inherently different about British children that means that such an arrangement would be unsuitable for this country. After all, some European children will have allergies or religious or other dietary requirements, which are presumably catered for.

I expect that there will be a couple of mains, selection of sides, plus fruit, cheese, bread and yogurt and if you really can't eat the mains, you can make a meal from the other foods on offer.

Damnautocorrect · 11/10/2022 17:58

I can raise you just free school meals making a difference.
For every pound spent on early years resources and poverty support the economy sees a return of £2.28.

Bagzzz · 11/10/2022 18:23

ouch321 · 11/10/2022 13:04

No to taxpayers footing the bill.

It's up to parents to fund their kids' meal costs.

People without kids shouldn't have to constantly subsidise other people's lifestyle choices.

I’m child free. Feeding children is a great investment. They are going to be the doctors, plumbers, carers, lawyers entrepreneurs and so many other things when I get older. Even if they weren’t they deserve a good meal. Means testing takes time and money so if some rich people get something they don’t need.

What's your source? I don't doubt you, i just want to read it as I work in the field of educational research and it could useful/pertinent.

I thought he was going to move abroad if the peasants voted for Brexit. Still here banging on though.

as far as finance is concerned, maybe if he’d paid his bills when his restaurants went bust instead of making sure he got his money out, fewer people would need free school meals.

You are clearly unfamiliar with the trading vehicle the limited liability company. But then, you think ‘of’ is a verb.

Damnloginpopup · 11/10/2022 20:11

Just because he put on weight he decided I had to pay more for a fucking coke because it's so full of sugar. Now I can't get anything I liked that doesn't have aspartame in it, which is vile unnatural shit.

Instead, Jamie, cut back on the pasta, pies, butter and cream in your books.

QueenOfHiraeth · 11/10/2022 20:26

I have mixed feelings about JO and am always a bit sceptical about campaigns like this as they often overlook practicalities but think, in essence, this is a good idea although I would sooner see the bar raised than giving to those who can afford to pay.

Problem is how to fund anything like this. It's easier in Scotland as the Barnett formula means the funding per head from Westminster is far higher than in England www.holyrood.com/news/view,ifs-say-barnett-formula-leaves-spending-in-scotland-30-higher-per-person-than-in-england

Karrots · 11/10/2022 21:35

Let’s ignore the fact JO said it and focus on the fact England had the ‘meanest’ policy in the UK with regards to this.
