How to calm myself down after an emotionally charged event

I've had a very long and stressful encounter with my dsis. I don't really want to go into the details of it as it's not the point of the thread but I'm left feeling really emotionally charged and can't get it out my system and I need to go to sleep!

Could you write it all down in notes on your phone or on a laptop and get it all out of your system that way?

Gosh I think I might feel like I'm bringing it up again and all I want to do is not think about it.

Some deep breathing and a podcast in bed to take your mind elsewhere?

I use an app called Breethe. I find it kinda "multi purpose "
You might find one of the guided meditations or breathing exercises helpful in stopping the churning feeling and constant dwelling.
There are also plenty that are specifically to help you sleep.
Have a look. There are probably hundreds of other apps but this one has been the most useful for me.

If you can concentrate on it, a book/podcast /film.
Or chamomile tea and a hot bath.
Or put on some music you like and dance it out.
If you have a DH or similar and they'll accompany you, go for a walk and enjoy the moon and stars and the darkness.
Or try the mindfulness exercise - 5 things you can see, 4 you can hear, 3 you can feel, 2 you can taste, 1, you can smell and so on ad nauseam.
I sympathise, it's horrible feeling like that hope something helps.

Do you have a feel good playlist or program or film?
Grab a pen and paper and write down all the things you've enjoyed/have gone well today/this week
Imagine you're home redecorating and need to buy new home bits, go online and fill your basket up with all the things you want!
Send yourself a really long voice note of your feelings
Call someone and talk

That reminds me - I do have a half watched movie that I could finish off. I'll try that.

I did deep breathing for a bit which helped but it's my mind buzzing which is making it hard.

I'll try the movie for now.

Imagine putting all the words and feelings into a sturdy box

Wrap the box up in brown paper. Write Timbuktu in the top and tie it with string

Take the box to the post office, stand in the queue then give it to the lady

When it comes back in your head, remind yourself that you sent that thing to Timbuktu

Omg that's bloody genius. That has bizarrely really helped! Wtf!
