Young Driver Insurance

Please can I have recommendations? DD is 18 and just passed her test, she had a little hatchback which we’ve just bought and need to get some insurance.

I’ve been sat all evening getting quotes but I’d like some advice from people who have it.

Thanks!

Insurance with a black box is usually cheaper. And it gives you the reassurance that if they are involved in an incident, they get called to make sure they are ok. If they don't answer the emergency services are sent to the location.

If a parent is added as an additional driver sometimes that takes the price down a little.

It's horrendously expensive especially for the first year.

Thank you, yes it’s very steep and going to be a struggle! Hopefully after the 1st year it’ll go down.

I was hoping not to have a black box, but it looks like I might have to.

We just went on all the comparison sites for DD's insurance. She was 17y7m when she passed. Had an old Pegeut 306 to insure.

We'd checked many months earlier and know it would be around £1400 so that's what she budgeted for (she paid hor her own insurance).

The cheapest insurance was with a black box. You have to be honest throughout with a black box. DD has insured for a low annual milage and discovered 3 months in she was going to exceed this, so had to pay extra (I think about £30). Black box monitors her speed etc constantly. I'm impressed, images her a really safe driver.

We found that by adding DH to her insurance as a named driver (so her insurance, but DH as am extra driver) lowered annual premium from £2000 to £1400. But interestingly adding me as an extra driver (with my two SP30s) only decreased by £300 not £600 - even though neither of us will actually drive the car.

Thank you. I was adding myself as an additional driver (no points) but I didn’t try without.

Are you into your second year yet? Has it decreased?

Marmalade does good learner and new driver insurance

I've recently bought my dd marmalade pay as you go insurance as couldn't afford anything else. I got 500 miles for about £350. You have a tracker in the car and have to have your phone on you. It's a bit annoying at first but getting used to it. It scores her drives and also mine which is quite interesting! I've heard some bad stuff about it though, like if your drives score too low you pay additional costs but I think it has to be pretty bad for that to happen. It was an affordable way to keep her driving though and I think the 500 miles will last her a good few months.

Some insurers will do a 10 month policy where they will award you a 1 years no claims bonus so that bring the painful first year down a little.

We used admiral little box when my daughter first passed aged 17.8. First year £850 in fiesta then £550 for second year. Excellent deal

She passed in April, so she's about 6 months in. We are expecting next year's insurance to be high too though.

My DD pats her insurance monthly direct debit. So as long as its something they can afford month-on-month, they don't have to pay for it sll upfront.

We've just started looking for insurance for DS, when he passes. He's 17 next month, so likely to need insurance in 6-12m time. The difference between males and females is stark. At least £600 more for exactly the same car snd cover as his sister.

She just needs to put aside several hours to go through comparison sites and also to play around with different options (adding extra drivers, with or without a black box, higher or lower excess, etc etc).
Ultimately, her age is against her - that can't be changed
her inexperience is against her - that can't be changed
her postcode will be a big factor - that can't be changed.
So you play around with things that can be changed.

Yes, it will take her a few hours, but when you can end up with a policy costing a fraction of the amount of the first quote, that is very worth while.

My daughter passed in August at 17, she has a Mini Cooper 1.6 and insured through Churchill with the black box app for 1.2 k which I didn't think was bad. Myself and husband are both named drivers.

CoilSpring · 11/10/2022 11:27

Thank you all, Marmalade looks the most competitive so far. It sounds a hassle to have the box and an app but we’ll have to suck it up!

It’s so frustrating that costs so much, it wasn’t like this back when I passed! It was expensive yes, but not more expensive than the car itself!!
