I put a capful of fabric softener in a full sink of boiling hot water and leave for an hour. The fumes circulate and make my home smell of freshly washed clothes. It's lovely.

Why didn't I think of this sooner

msssm · 10/10/2022 19:28

Neom Happiness is wonderful. Whether candle or oil it smells amazing.

Bunce1 · 10/10/2022 19:31

Wipe your rads with some fabric conditioner.

put a heavy bottomed metal pan on top of your wood burner with some water and cinnamon sticks in in.

Essential oil, very diluted.
Never scented candles or fabric softener or Zoflora etc because of the chemicals.

LadyEloise1 · 10/10/2022 19:33

Brooke and Shoals candles are great, particularly the Sweet Pea and Tea Rose one. The scent is beautiful and the "throw" is great.
Superior to my very expensive Diptyque Baies.

Devon wick wax melts

tootrueblue · 10/10/2022 19:40

Basics are opening the windows every day, hoovering with shake n vac and popping zoflora into the half sink in the kitchen with hot water - our dogs sleep in the kitchen so it needs this every day.
On top of that, I've got 2 wax melters with melts from Scentsy and an expensive obsession with candles from the White Company 😬

Sprig1 · 10/10/2022 19:45

Open the windows.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 10/10/2022 19:48

Open windows and doors, followed by Glass and Wick soy wax melts. Subtle, non toxic to fish and wildlife - the opposite of Scentsy-esq shite (although I do have one of their lamps - good to leave on / no flame etc. But their wax gives me an enormous headache).

Diptyque candles everywhere. The large ceramic pot ones have excellent throw even unlit. They also do fabulous room sprays which I love to use too.

I like wax melts, and have tried some of the codangle candles, they are made by a UK company and made using soy wax so are non toxic (you can buy them from amazon) I have a vanilla ice cream scented one at the moment…

I also use a spray mop daily on floors with a perfumed disinfectant (zoflora or fabulousa), and sometimes spray sofa cushions and the rug with watered down fabric conditioner (1 cap full of fabric conditioner in a spray bottle full of water).

Is regular candle wax toxic? I hope not, I always have a candle burning!

rosyroses · 10/10/2022 20:18

Cleaning. I always think the house smells fresher when I clean the windows 😂

But washing throws and cushion covers also helps.

Clean skirting boards and doors down with a nice smelling cleaner

With fragrances for houses the pods are good like the neom one but everyone starts to go nose blind to familiar smells. Everyone says our clothes smell lovely but I can't smell a thing!

ouch321 · 10/10/2022 20:46

People saying buy a cheap diffuser but good quality oils, what are some that you can recommend or even if not the specific variant, a brand?

I was looking in Primark at various home fragrance today and some stuff was as cheap as 80p but I sense it would smell very chemically.

I like simple fresh air for spring/summer but as it gets colder and darker outside I was minded to get something to try at home to make the place seem 'warmer' so this thread has come at the perfect time for me.

I've tried Airwick plug ins but I find them too strong and synthetic. So recommendations on diffusers + oils would be appreciated.

Begoniasforever · 10/10/2022 20:59

i just got one of these from amazon, there is loads of them. I like the mystic moments oils. I use a few drops of Ylang ylang and I add amber from another brand, I also like the gingerbread one for winter also from another brand. The gingerbread I use on its own. I find the fruity ones quite sharp.

you can pay a few quid more and get ones that stay on for six hours. That one does 3 I think.

I also got some little pipette droppers from Amazon as I find it easier, I fill the diffuser with water and then add about four or five drops of oil. Depends on how strong you like it, and switch it on. Fills the whole of downstairs. The oils last for ages.

I always put it on if I have guests, and everyone always says how nice the house smells when they come in.

Yes.
“Conventional candles can release toxic chemicals including formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen, acetaldehyde, which is a probable human carcinogen, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's), some of which are known or suspected human carcinogens.”

Ah yes I do this with zoflora

Iammatrix · 10/10/2022 21:55

I open Windows early morning, for 15 mins/1/2 hr depending on weather and now CH.

I have diffusers around the house with essential oils to suit my mood - lavender, peppermint, tea tree, bergamot, eucalyptus etc....

I have a humidifier also which as well as taking moisture from the air, eliminates cooking smells.

I like a nice smelling house.

I do also use candles, Kit Kemp are nice.

I like to move through the different rooms and areas of the house as the different aromas come to my attention, awakening my senses.

open windows...
dettol in half sink with boiling water...
Scented beads in socks on the rads...
The scented dryer sheets behind the tv...
Incense sticks...

I have a spray bottle with water and half a capful of lenor fabric softener, spray the curtains, floor and radiators for a freshen up with the windows open, smells lovely. I wouldn't be putting it in boiling water, nor zoflora, the fumes you'd be breathing in with the vapour would surely be really bad for your health?

Also have an oil burner with bergamot oil, smells much like the happiness essential oil from neom but don't use it often. Love the sand and fog candles too, can smell them all the time and hardly ever light them. M&s have some nice smelling oils for the burner, we actually got the m&s burner too it looks lovely.

BangingOn · 01/05/2023 13:48

I have a few Neom reed diffusers around the house and regularly use my Aromatherapy Associates Atomiser.

caringcarer · 01/05/2023 13:54

Bake some cookies then it smells and taste nice too.
