What's the easiest way to make a lot of decent coffee?

Well, think 20 cups rather than two but not 200 Smile

I'm organising an event soon and I don't drink coffee, but people seem a bit sniffy about instant. I own one cafetière (but don't actually know how much coffee to put in it when I do use it!!) and have scope for purchasing or borrowing items from other organisers. What's the easiest thing to do? Just borrow a couple more cafetières?

If they're sniffy they can go without Smile

Get a decent tin of instant.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 10/10/2022 16:12

I think that's probably the easiest. You should get 4 out of each? Or one of those old-fashioned electric percolators?

TwoWeeksislong · 10/10/2022 16:13

Cafetières make decent coffee and are very easy to use. If you have about three of the six cup size you can deal with 20 coffees in no time. It’s pretty quick and easy to dump the coffee grounds and make up a new batch too.

Don't use instant-not for an event. Cafetières are the best option here....

NannyR · 10/10/2022 16:26

We use big insulated cafetieres for refreshments at church, I think they are 1.5 litre like these. I put three heaped dessert spoons of ground coffee in to make a decent strength coffee. Other churches use the filter coffee jugs that sit on a hotplate.

Depends on the event...

Have you ever tasted that coffee as it sounds very weak to me, but I do like strong coffee.

StillRunningWithScissors · 10/10/2022 16:51

Could you hire a coffee urn? Then you don't need to worry about refilling/keeping it warm etc?

I agree - I’d put four heaped spoons in a regular domestic sized one @Blueberrycreampie 😂 I do like my coffee on the strong side though :)

That doesn’t sound like much coffee for 1.5l?

Coffee bags and instant. Let them choose.

Lochroy · 10/10/2022 17:42

Thanks very much! I'll try and avoid instant if possible. Should hopefully be able to borrow a couple of cafetières but I'll also look up what a coffee urn is. I have no idea!

You need a Big Ern (i.e. a big urn)

RaRaRaspberryKing · 10/10/2022 18:07

Coffee bags is actually a really good shout! Could get a bag of 20 bags for about a fiver maybe less - they are like tea bags but it's ground coffee - they taste good to me and don't have to worry too much about getting the strength right, and no grounds to get rid of! I use them for work sometimes in the office and are much nicer than instant! I used the Percol brand

Argos sell 1.5l cafetières for £12. It wouldn’t take long to serve 20 using one of those.

7g per spoonful for a cafetiere, and for British people who like their coffee long, half as many spoonfuls as there are cups. So a big 12 cup cafetiere would need 36g of ground coffee. A standard 8 cup would need 28g of coffee.

One 7g scoop.makes an espresso but most of us expect more like a filter coffee.

You could make strong espresso coffee in the cafetiere and mix it with hot water in a vacuum jug.

The size of the cups is important. If you heat the milk people don't get cold coffee.

If you are in CB area I can lend you lots of electric percolators 😊 My choice would be a filter coffee pot with two jugs. Easiest way to make a batch.

We use two of them at work for meetings (team of 22 but not everyone drinks coffee), they are really good.

FinallyHere · 10/10/2022 18:56

How serious are the coffee drinkers?

At our recent events, a barista and van showed up (like an ice creme van) turning out really great quality coffee

Absolutely highlight of the event.

UniversalTruth · 10/10/2022 19:00

I would like to know what type of event it is - smart work event I would say filter or cafetiere coffee. Kids party I would serve Kenco millicano or similar is fine.

UniversalTruth · 10/10/2022 19:03

To be clear, the coffee at my imaginary kids party is for the grown ups.

I'm not mad 😂

daisyjgrey · 10/10/2022 19:05

I'd rather no coffee than rubbish coffee. Where I am there are lots of baristas with vans that they serve from, so I'd probably ask one of those to come, but it entirely depends on what kind of event it is.

Cherryana · 10/10/2022 19:09

If you are not a coffee drinker it can be very hard to understand why coffee drinkers are so sniffy. But there are reasons beyond just being snobby of difficult.

Instant coffee and real coffee are not the same. They taste so different it is like two completely different drinks but with the same name. When you drink a lot of real coffee, drinking instant, literally makes you wretch. It becomes disgusting to your palate. I guess the difference between real bananas and banana chewy sweets.

Having said that - I do rate coffee bags.

Blueberrycreampie · 10/10/2022 19:10

@Tryingtokeepgoing I put 5 in but it's fairly large - 4 cups? I hate weak coffee!!

Skala123 · 10/10/2022 19:12

Not sure if they do it here but in the US all the big coffee shops do take away vats of coffee with a little tap thing. They have about 10-20 cups in each one. Might be worth checking Starbucks or costa

Olivetreebutter · 10/10/2022 19:29

Get one of the big vacuum flasks and make your cafetiere coffee in advance. Then all you have to do at the time is pour, no waiting around. This kind of thing:
