What's everyone's energy showing on their smart meters?

Because ours is jumping more each day...
Saturday it was showing about £7 by the evening, Sunday £8ish and last night by 10pm it was on £10!! It's freaking me out ! It seems to be going higher each day...
yesterday I didn't use the washer or anything, only thing is I had the slow cooker on all day but surely that's not going to use loads is it ?
We have an American fridge freezer so I think this may be the biggest consumer, we also have a farmhouse style range gas cooker.

Just starting to really worry what it's going to be like with the heating on when it's really cold and trying to dry our clothes because you can guarantee the tumble dryer is going to kill it so I don't want to use it !

I don't know but I'm on a prepayment metre and topping up about £10 a day :(

thunderonlyhappenswhen · 10/10/2022 12:31

@DogDa my mom is on a prepayment meter too I'll have to ask what's she's putting on! It's ridiculous isn't it, and to think it was going to be more wasn't it

I've used £19 in 6 days, since last Tuesday when I had £81, now I have £62. Prepayment with Utilita

I average about £5 a day, and I have two vivaria running, as well as having run the tumble drier and an American f/f.

Are you sure those numbers aren't cumulative?

Before the 1st Oct, I was averaging about £1.60 a day on electricity - myself and 3 DCs in the house.
Since the price hike, it’s hitting at least £4 a day with the same usage of everything.
I feel sick over it. Haven’t put my heating on yet, but it is cold - especially in the mornings, so not sure how much longer I’ll be able to hold off with it.

My last week...

I have a three bed plus study terraced house. Haven't put the heating on yet but I do have a gas fire which I've turned on a few days. This past week we have averaged about £3.75/day combined. I have a dryer but I only use it a couple times a week.

thunderonlyhappenswhen · 10/10/2022 12:56

It's combined so thats gas and electric but it goes off about 10pm at night (the smart meter) turns itself back on at 6am and was already on £2 something this morning, would that be a standing charge ?
Before October I was averaging about £5 a day. Less in summer

When I left the flat this morning it was on £1.32.

thunderonlyhappenswhen · 10/10/2022 13:02

We had to go on a new tariff start of September which was the standard variable - had no choice in picking tariffs

4 bed detached. 2 of us, in the house 24/7 as WFH. We have an ultra efficient Worcester Bosch gas boiler, American FF, Tumble drier. all lights are smart and LED, We also have Tado Smart heating fitted with TRV's in all rooms.

We average a day:
Electricity: £3.50
Gas: £2.00

This will rise from December as I'll be charging an electric car.

Olsi109 · 10/10/2022 13:18

I'm averaging about £5 per day since 1st oct. I have had the heating on when it falls below 18 (2 adult, 2 teens and a baby). I put the dryer on 20 mins ago (our washer broke last week so I've had to catch up on washing and I've no where to dry that much so bad no choice). I'm going to check the smart meter again once it's finished to find out how much it cost me 😳😳

StJeanDeVence · 10/10/2022 13:36

Averaging about £2.50 a day on electric and 15p on gas, so far - that's not includng the standing charge.

Just me at home most of the day, as WFH. Laptop / printer on all day, try to put dishwasher and washing machine on at cheaper times. Oven is a range that eats electric, trying to use airfryer more often for the evening meal and just cold food or intermittent fasting during the day! I'm not showering every day if I'm not going out, either.

The gas will go through the roof as soon as we put the heating on. I'm currently sitting in my chilly home office with fingerless gloves on, a scarf and a hot water bottle on my lap and will try to last without heating for as long as possible!

thunderonlyhappenswhen · 10/10/2022 13:47

Wow everyone's seems so low compared to ours, but I'm not sure that we're doing anything different either ?! I don't think we are !

A lot will depend on how efficient your appliances are etc too, do you have TRV's on your radiators? And lightbulbs? Are they LED etc? I noticed our meter shoot up when the security light came on it the yard because its a halogen bulb. Same with the kitchen cooker hood. It's only small stuff but added together it does make a difference.

We rarely boil the kettle as well, we have a coffee percolator that has a thermal jug so it boils in the morning which costs about the same as boiling the kettle, but the jug full of coffee will then stay warm until mid afternoon.

Cost my 85p for the hour (boiled kettle once in that time) - not as bad as I thought it would be

StJeanDeVence · 10/10/2022 13:57

I think things like big all-singing, all-dancing fridge/freezers (which I'd love!) can be a real drain on the electric. Ours is annoyingly small and shite but fairly cost-efficient.

I have one of those included in my £3.50 a day average.
A 'resting' rate for the house with everything on standby including the fridge is about 12p an hour.

Rarenamer · 10/10/2022 14:29

Ours is £2.50 - £3 a day for gas & electric at the moment, which has gone up as we use to be £1.50-£2 a day.

We work from home and have kids here all day so computers are on all the time but we make sure all plugs not in use are switch off, only boil enough water in kettle for what we need, haven’t used dryer (except once a week for towels) or dishwasher for 6 months, we have energy saving lightbulbs and only have heating come on early morning for a hour.

We’ve been using our slow cooker more as that doesn’t seem to affect energy costs whereas the oven is old and takes ages to cook so uses to much gas.

Tigerblue4 · 10/10/2022 15:04

What were the rates on your old tariff and the new one you went onto in September? That might help us work out some of the difference. Another factor, did you start using your heating in September?

We're not on a smart meter, but our monthly bills for July&Aug were £65 based on readings, and September was £68 - I can account for the £3 extra as DD was home for ten days, but otherwise it would have been close to the summer readings (no heating on yet).

MrsPear · 10/10/2022 16:09

Here it is in money for last week. It’s what I expect - no heating yet but the bathroom radiator is now switched on as this runs when hot water is on. I cook from scratch most days - hot breakfast usually too. Washing machine once a day and no tumble drier.

Ariela · 10/10/2022 16:15

We've never been on anything but standard variable and I'm not surprised by how much it's gone up by. We have progressively future-proofed our house by replacing with very energy efficient appliances, LED lights etc and maximising solar, so the actual increase isn't great in terms of actual costs as our costs are low (although I'm annoyed by the standing charge as that's payback for all of you that fixed - DH thought the companies that fixed lower would claw it back rather than go bust) So for us it's manageable. But for those of you previously on a lower fix I can understand your pain.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 10/10/2022 16:34

Average no heating, £3 a day.
Today its on £3.10!+ but have done 6 loads washing. No tumble as line drying.
Id imagine by time dinner, showers etc it be 5
