Easy meal ideas for children? I've lost inspiration

RooksAndRavens · 09/10/2022 21:30

Can anyone help me please to think of some quick, easy meal ideas for my children? They're 4 and 1 years old, no allergies, eat meat. I'm not a natural when it comes to cooking or meal ideas. I find it stressful and overwhelming for some reason. Lunchtime ideas I particularly struggle with. I really need some inspiration.

Keep lunch simple with mini sandwiches and fruit.
In the evening serve them the same as you. No need for children’s food. Mine are 22 and 18 now but for the most part ( apart from a hot curry) they ate the same meals by that age. We would have pasta,, chicken casserole, sausage and mash etc

Sometimes my two liked a cooked breakfast for dinner. 😜

Our menu at that age was pretty much
Soup if we were at home
Sandwiches if we were out
Keep it simple

I get soft taco shells and put out an oily fish (probably from a can) and cucumber slices, red pepper, maybe avocado, sliced tomato - kids’ salad, basically. Maybe some grated cheese. The older one likes assembling and the younger one is occupied with trying all the bits.

Evening meal was just what ever we were having - if having curry I would add extra coconut milk or whatever tho thier portion and add chillies etc after o had plates thiers up.

lunch - sandwiches, something on toast, soup, wraps, bagels, mini pizzas, picky bits, sausage rolls, omlettes, boiled eggs. Pasta salad, hot pasta jacket potato, crumpets, dumplings and noodles, quiche, etc

Mine love a mixture of nibbles for lunch so things like veg sticks and houmous, crackers, cheese, bread, apple slices, grapes, ham, couscous, pasta salad etc. Obviously not all in one sitting! We also have soup quite often. Or boiled egg and soldiers. Or leftovers from the night before.

For tea they have the same as us. We eat a lot of curry. And a lot of "one pan" type things such as smoked sausage and potatoes, chicken thighs with roasted veg etc. We have fish quite often with steamed veg.

Watching for inspiration.
For lunch mine like beans on toast/potato waffles, sandwiches/wraps with veggie sticks, noodles with peas/sweetcorn, tuna pasta, pesto pasta, cheese on toast or cheese and crackers with cherry tomatoes, soup with bread or breadsticks or ‘bits and bobs’ which is little bits of whatever I have in -fruit, salad, avocado, pretzels, olives, deli meats, pine nuts, raisins, mini sausages or scotch eggs.
Tea (I’m northern!) is whatever we’re having with the odd freezer meal thrown in if I’ve had a long day at work (usually 2 or 3 times a month). Mild curries, chilli, bolognaise, fajitas, roast dinner, casserole, shepherd/cottage pie, quiche, cooked breakfast, fish pie or another homemade pie with veg, stir fries, paella, soup etc.

I can barely remember but I think staples were: bread and butter, edam, ham, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, grapes, strawberries, occasional olive. Sometimes they got pasta with butter peas and a bit of salmon or tuna stirred in, scrambled egg on toast or fish fingers with mash and trees. Lunch was always minimum hassle.

They had what we had for dinner.

Often a picky kind of lunch here.

Fruit and or salad eg. Tomatoes, cucumber, grapes, orange, blackberries, mango, apple

Cheese like grated cheddar or a babybel

Peanut butter on toast or a half a flat seeded bagel with butter or cream cheese on or some buttered French bread

Sometimes a few cocktail sausages (only meat DD will eat)

She likes a toasted sandwich with various fillings but isn't a big fan of soup so we don't tend to have that although I'd love more of it!

For lunch
Something On toast either, cheese and Tom, scrambled egg, avocado, poached egg, baked beans, tinned plum tomatoes.
Toasties with (depending who's eating) cheese and tomato, cheese and onion, cheese and marmite, tomato and mozzarella.
Pitas with hummus and grated carrot, tuna with sweetcorn, red onion and peppers, egg salad, falafel lettuce and minted yoghurt, or cut into fingers and baked then served with houmous/cream cheese, guacamole etc as a dip with carrot or cucumber sticks.
Wraps with tuna and cucumber, ham salad, chicken and sweet corn.
Quesadilla
Crumpets with butter and marmite.
Bagels with cream cheese and cucumber, smoked salmon,
Bacon sandwich
Various soups with par baked bread
Boiled egg and soldiers
Tuna pasta with sweet corn, peppers, spring onion, 'pizza bagels'
Cous cous with left over roasted veg and chicken
Cheese and crackers
Omelettes or fritata
Most things get veg sneaked in and crudités or cherry tomatoes on the side. Usually followed by fruit and yoghurt.
I tend to keep a range of bread products in the freezer to allow a bit more variety instead of a week of wrap or a week of pita.
