Berlin with kids

We are going to Berlin with our kids next month, they are 7, 5 and 8 months. We will be staying in the city centre.

I've gone through all of the old threads but wanted to narrow things down a bit. We are going for 3 days and the second day falls on my 40th birthday so I would love to do something special.

I like museums but don't feel like I can emotionally cope with any of the more sensitive ones, especially not with the kids. I would like somewhere that the whole family can enjoy, and am partial to a modern art type of place. Somewhere a bit different that my kids would be interested in.

I would also love to find a brilliant restaurant in the city centre that we can go to on my birthday evening.

I know there are a lot of Berliners here so please share your inside knowledge! I would just love a special, memorable birthday with my husband and kids in a city we've never visited before.

Thank you!

Museum of Things is a bit out of the way for you. I would go to the Museum of Decorative Arts, you can walk through Tiergarten to get there after lunch.

Don't go to the Irish pubs! You're only there for 3 days, why would you go to something you can do at home, they are mainly tourist traps. Go to a German beer garden or cafe, they are so much nicer.

Oh the Irish pub thing! 😀 We are Irish but live in Italy and my husband loves to stop for a pint of Guinness any time he can find an opportunity! He also loves German beer too (all the beers actually 😄)

We visited Berlin when dc was about 9yrs old. Its a v spread out city & while we enjoyed it we sort of found it difficult as there was no sense of 'city centre'.

Some of the things we did with dc which we all enjoyed:
Brandenburg Gate & a glass of sekt at the Adlon Hotel
A stroll down Under den Linten
Berlinerdom & a coffee & cake in thr crypt cafe
The rittersport huge shop & cafe (a highlight for dc - design your own chocolate bar!)
The Frieda Khalo museum & a coffee in the gorgeous conservatory cafe there
A horse & carriage ride (dc was horse mad)
The East Sude Gallery -graffitti on thr old Berlin Wall- really interesting
The holocaust memorial
The zoo (we don't really like zoos but it was very close to our hotel & dc made a case for it)
Traditional beer halls
Coffee & cake in the food hall of KaDeWa department store with a stop via the toy department & a stroll down kurfustendam
We ate outside at hackermarkt (spelling is wrong) but loads of choice there

As you can see we interspersed the more adult interests with plenty of kid friendly stuff too

Hope you have a fab 40th !

Thank you Negroni! I'm going to compile all these suggestions and myself and the rest of the gang will look them up and decide!

We went up into the dome of the Reichstag when it was dark and it was really cool! The dome itself actually has a walkway going around inside the dome that you can walk up, it was my favourite thing in Berlin.
