It all depends on how much you weight, what your calorie deficit it is.

there’s no set answer

I'd be careful of losing that much really quickly, and 12m is quick if that's your aim. It will lead to an awful lot of loose skin - one of my friends did that with a gastric band and he is still waiting for an operation to remove skin 3 years on.

I'd aim for 3st/ year. That's around 1lb a week if my maths isn't letting me down, and very realistsic to achieve without setting up bad habits and without stressing your body too much.

So 3 years ish, though of course the first stone will be quicker than the second etc.

In my experience at least 18 months and Id say that was optimistic!
You may lose a bit more at first but roughly half a stone a month would be good going Id say, and thats being completely committed 3 meals a day, 7 days a week.
But in reality you will have holidays/birthdays/special occasions/life!
Obviously also depends how you are doing it - total meal replacement/800 cals a day is obviously a lot quicker than standard calorie counting for eg

Ive not lost 10 stone but have lost 6 in the past, although everyone is different, you seem to see people on instagram losing a stone/10lbs a month with slimming world for eg, god knows how they manage it

crazeecatladee · 09/10/2022 12:33

So many variables. The perceived wisdom is 1kg a week. Thats approx 3,900 cals which you would need to create a deficit by eating less energy dense foods (fat and UHPFs) and exercise more. However, the amount of exercise you'd need to do to even come close is enormous especially if exercise isn't part of your routine. It will get you fitter and help to develop muscle but it's a long term life style change. Ten stone to lose is a lot and even if you had the will power and support in place to help half a stone a month is doable so do the maths. Good luck!

I lost 7 stone 2 in 8 or 9 months a few years back, but I was hungry a lot of the time, in the gym for well over an hour 5 days out of 7 plus swimming and endless walking on top. It was bloody hard work and I wouldn't have time to do that now I've become a single parent and swapped jobs so the gym is no longer across the road from my office. Give yourself 2 years to do the job slowly and sustainably!

Rubiesue · 09/10/2022 12:36

Op, it depends. Gastric surgery if you are around say 19 stone, and it may be “easier”/quicker. Look at the book “why we eat too much”.

I once lost 1.5 stone in six weeks, but I was anorexic and ate nothing, more or less. I do NOT recommend it. Get professional support op?

Heysnuggee · 09/10/2022 12:36

For that amount of weight I'd see if your local authority has any sort of weight loss support scheme- we do here. Don't rush, make small changes they soon add up and more likely to be taken on as changes to lifestyle and more sustainable, and listen to your body. I'd break it down personally and set goals not necessarily attached to weight loss ie I want to transition slowly down to x calories a day, y amount of activity and weight loss will follow that. Whilst it is possible in a year I wouldn't recommend it, it took time to put weight on and it takes time to lose it; every day you're working towards it though you're doing great things for your health.

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 09/10/2022 12:37

About 2 years to lose it, then about 5 years to put it all back on, give or take. Losing it is easier than keeping it off for the next several decades.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/10/2022 12:40

3-4 years would be less traumatic and give you time to adjust to a permanent change in lifestyle, rather than an intense period of deprivation with the feeling that 'this will all be over in x weeks and I can eat what I want again'.

Garysmum · 09/10/2022 12:41

I lost 8 in 5 years. Absolutely no saggy skin at all. I admit to putting 4-5 back on. It only 3 lbs overweight.

Howmanysleepsnow · 09/10/2022 12:53

Realistically, it will take the same amount of time as it did to gain it if you want it to stay off. So half a stone gained on a two week holiday can go in 2 weeks, but if it crept on over a year it’s more likely to take a year of changed habits.

Cost of living should help?
No money for food, heating off so you use your energy keeping warm.
Exercise to keep warm. Every little helps!
