What can I do “for me”

Breakforone · 09/10/2022 12:03

have depression, am on meds. I have quite a demanding job (Mon to Fri) and two young children. I don’t get much time to myself and feel am stuck in a cycle of just get through the day/week then repeat.

I think maybe a hobby would help but have no idea where to start, I feel like I need something just for meze and Ben a sense of achievement. I’m fairly active so thinking maybe something for the mind as opposed to fitness? Anyone felt like this and what would you recommend?

Pottery is supposed to be amazing. I like cooking personally. I find preparing an evening meal mundane and boring, but taking the time to make something like a pie really satisfying, and I don’t even need to leave the house.

Craft is the obvious answer - knitting, embroidery, dressmaking, quilting etc. But assuming you don’t want something crafty, some ideas are:

Learning a language
Researching a particular era of history
Joining a book club
Genealogy and family history
Journalling
Jigsaw Puzzles
Video editing and photography
learning to draw
Writing a novel
Keeping an aquarium

I've just joined a no audition choir 'for me'.

I would say a walking group or something outdoorsy as a balance?

I get up quite early on a Saturday/Sunday morning and take myself off for a long walk. I used to listen to music but found it quite distracting as I would be quite focussed on the songs and what I would queue up to listen to next so I’ve switched to crime podcasts which are engaging and can be long.
lovely to have the time to myself, it’s rare other than that brief snippet of time, and I’m back early enough that it doesn’t cut into the day at all.
it’s not for fitness purposes as like you I’m quite active but it gives me some headspace and it’s usually very quiet, and the benefit of the beautiful scenery is an added bonus.

Do you want something sociable or something solo?

An hours walk just for you. Take in scenery and watch it change over the seasons. Start timing yourself and walking faster to get speed up if you want to combine a bit of fitness with it.
Another one is sewing. Machines aren't that expensive and tutorials on YouTube are easy to follow. Just have fun making things etc. It might progress into something where you start making basic garments, childrens toys, home furnishings etc. Just make sure you ring fenced the time or it will get eaten up by others and doing chores
