Ridiculous driving mistake

Today I drove from Essex to London with my four-month-old. It should have taken an hour. Halfway through the journey I double-checked the destination on Google Maps (had an anxious internal voice tell me to) and then carried on.

40 mins or so into the journey it said we were about half an hour away, then was slowly counting down as we got nearer.

I noticed the signage was saying London was the opposite direction but I just assumed it was because I was going around London on the M25.

Then I noticed signs for Chelmsford. That can't be right. It was only when I was about 15 mins from home that I realised I'd looped back on myself because I must have set the destination to HOME on my maps when I checked it!

Honestly how bloody stupid can I be? I despair at my driving ability sometimes. I don't think I'm a danger on the road as I am sensible and careful but navigating the fucking roads I am shocking at!

I even thought to myself "this roundabout is a bit random" when it was the one that must've sent me looping back on myself.

To make matters worse when we continued back in the right direction we couldn't even go on the motorway, we ended up on all the congested roads from Romford. 🫣

My sister is like this, I have to check her sat nav for her Grin We went round and round this ridiculous roundabout several times before we realised it hadn't erased the previous destination.

I have no sense of direction but I could walk a bus route and roughly work out which direction I was travelling in the country by major city signs. So I must have a bit of one.

These have cheered me up. One of the reasons I no longer drive is I found getting lost so stressful. (at least on foot you can stop and regroup easier). Some of my son’s first words were “Mummy are we lost again”.

This reminds me of my sister. I was driving once she was reading me directions from Google maps on her phone. It kept on directing us down tiny lanes and alleys that really weren't suitable for a car, and kept trying to get us on the canal towpath. After 40 minutes or so of not getting very far, I finally asked her if she were sure it was set to car. It turns out she had it set for the walking route.
