WWYD - Christmas presents for adult dcs

DC1 and DC2 live with partners and DC3 lives alone. What's fairer for Christmas - an amount of money per person or per household? I'm leaning towards per household. All want to buy "stuff" for their homes - if I give per person, dcs with partners would be able to get more and faster. DC3 already at a disadvantage financially as paying for everything alone and would have to wait longer for what they want. WWYD?

If you give an amount of money per household you're effectively not giving the partners anything.

I'd give say £100 per household and then get them each another present but make DS3's bigger

My inlaws do per person but with a less amount for partners (eg their kids each get 200 and partners get 50)

NumptiesIncorporated · 08/10/2022 19:19

What I would do what I, and my family, have done, and done away with Christmas presents.

It's really a daft idea when you think about it. I spend money on something you don't really want and you spend money on something I don't really want. The result is we both end up poorer, but owning stuff we don't really want. Instead we all bring food and drinks to share, a couple of people will bring boardgames, and we make the most of the time together. We save gifts for birthdays and for 'i saw this and thought of you' moments. Everyone is happier for it.

In that case DC3 gets their 'non' partners share - if they hadn't asked for money all DC would get the same and their partners would get a 'nice' gift but nothing like to the value of what my DC would get.

OrigamiOwls · 08/10/2022 19:28

If you do "per household" you are essentially giving your 3 children gifts and leaving out the partners. Fine if your comfortable with that, maybe a rethink if not.

ChipsforMe · 08/10/2022 19:42

I give my children and each of their partners the same amount each (so my Son InLaw gets the same amount of cash as my DD and DS)

My parents always gave my DH the same as me.

We do per person, but the single one still lives at home, thanks stupidly expensive rent

nokitchen · 08/10/2022 20:03

Mine get £100 of gifts per person. Partners included

ImAvingOops · 08/10/2022 20:14

I'd probably buy a joint gift for the couple - something for the house. There's nothing wrong in a couple sharing a gift. And then get something individual at birthdays.

Ellmau · 08/10/2022 20:37

House gifts for each DC as requested, and additional non-house type gift for the partners.

TheRubyRedshoes · 08/10/2022 20:52

How odd.

DH gets 200 from his parents and I've always assumed it's for "us"?

Could it really be possible that they only give it to him? He never treat's it as his own, we couldn't afford too.
He usually puts it towards the car mot and tax insurance in January.

My family gave each of us money.

I'd never thought that money wasn't for me .

Op each household I'd go for assuming it's. Gift for them all.

Re single... give the same

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 08/10/2022 20:55

My dc get the same spent and any dp's get token gifts. None married, one barely cohabiting this year!

TokenGinger · 08/10/2022 22:05

My parents do per household. Last year, each of us got £100 addressed in a card to use and partner. My younger brother has separated from his partner and needs stuff/money far more than we do so I'd hope his isn't reduced due to partner no longer being there. It'll be a huge help for him to be able to put towards a carpet or something for his new house.

doubledeckerdreamer · 08/10/2022 22:11

In our family each of our children get £500 and we buy everyone (dc and partners) something to open. The dc in relationships put the cash towards the household the single dc don't miss out.
