Most enjoyable office equipment (yes I know I have no life)

I always thought using a laminator was the most enjoyable of ‘office’ tasks, but I’ve just had a clear out of old paperwork and spent the afternoon shredding and it is very satisfying.

The only other contender I can think of is using a label maker, but I can’t really justify buying one. We used to have one at work and I spent a lovely afternoon labelling anything that stood still for long enough.

Wall stapler. It’s probably realistically required about twice a year, and one of those occasions a normal stapler would do the job. But it’s so satisfying. If I can laminate something, guillotine it and wall staple it I’m happy.

Parcel tape dispenser.
Or, and I'm stretching the office description here a bit, a tagging gun. The kind that fires little plastic arrows through fabric to attach labels to clothes in stores. OMG. Such immense satisfaction.

Actually last weekend I picked up a desktop pencil sharpener at a junk shop. All the pencils in the house are now laser sharp. There's a theory that designers would get their best ideas in those pencil sharpening breaks.

Having said that I still carry a propelling pencil around in case I'm suddenly called on to draw something old style.

I laminated for the first time recently. It was so relaxing, I loved it.
I'm also quite partial to a stamp. But those plastic wallets that slide around everywhere are the devils work.

TrainspottingWelsh · 08/10/2022 21:43

I’ve always fancied one of those revolving stamps like a librarian where you can change the print but I can’t even think of a far fetched and unlikely scenario for using it.

Up until last year I had to clock in on an old-fashioned machine which made a very satisfying clunk. I still have to clock in but now I swipe my card. Not as pleasing.

When I was moving house I got a parcel tape gun. So much fun.

I have my own comb binder, bought when DC were studying the piano, but I’ve never been handy with it. One or two teeth miss different pages Confused.

I’m a whizz with the photocopier, though. Masking off books to save toner, scaling up and down, making booklets, husbanding the pile of reusable paper (non-sensitive). Skills learned before desktop publishing.

I’ve broken more than one laminator in the past so hate laminating now as it gives me the fear. I love the guillotine and the staple gun though. Putting my classroom displays up fills me with joy! I’m desperate for my own electric pencil sharpener, there is one in the classroom next door but I need my own! Off to search amazon now.

@twilightcafe oh yes I know I will find things that have to be labelled, I just worry for my family - I have a feeling the teen won’t be happy if they go to school accidentally labelled.

The novelty of labelling everything does wear off quite quickly I think. Or maybe I'm just not that devoted to my label maker.
I would like an old fashioned dymo one though!

I had a home laminator completely swallow my laminating pouch and contents. It all just disappeared!! I think it objected to me laminating a pouch of autumn leaves.

I stick to paper in the replacement!!

In the olden days in my first Saturday job in the Coop I loved using the price gun!

PrincessButtercupToo · 09/10/2022 00:25

I like the Filofax hole punch.

BrandyandGinger · 09/10/2022 00:30

The label maker is definitely my favourite.

I used to work in a food plant and we couldn't take paper with regular staples onto the factory floor so I can testify that staple free staplers are complete rubbish.

We have an ancient shredder at work and it's situated between departments where it's in everyones way. I'm campaigning to get a new one just for my area. I know I'll love it, but probably not as much as I love the label maker.

DD actually has a USB electric pencil sharpener. It's fab but so quick, if you leave the pencil in for a fraction too long it ends up half it's original size.

The Derwent sharpener is just as bad to be honest, it's like a little sawmill.
