How to get the smell and stain of dog pee out of my carpet?

We have a lovely (fairly new) silver/grey carpet on the stairs and landing.
A month ago, we rescued a 2 year old dog.
I wanted to put up a stair gate but DH didn’t want to and of course that has backfired because our lovely dog has shot upstairs on a few occasions and piddled up the wall and onto the carpet on the landing.
He has used the same spot several times.
I blotted and cleaned it up (with hot water and disinfectant) straight away but there is an awful smell and it has now stained yellow. It’s starting to smell like a manky public toilet now!
I am thinking of hiring a carpet cleaner but wonder if there are any tips I can try before I do this (could do without the expense of hiring a carpet cleaner right now).

Bicarbonate of soda.
I inherited ddog when my DM passed recently, ddog had a touch (a big touch) of diarrhea and had an accident on my cream carpet, I used carpet shampoo but the stain kept reappearing, I mixed up a past of bicarb and water and worked it into the carpet then hoovered when it was dry, voilà!
Bicarb or baking soda is really good for stains and also removes the odour of wee.
If the area still smells put a bowl of bicarb/ baking soda next to it as it absorbs odours too but keep the ddog away from the bowl.
I've also used bicarb on an oil stain and wax melt splashes, you can try using it dry, sprinkle it on, work it into the fibres, leave over night then hoover it up.
I hate my cream carpets 😂

It needs to be cleaned with an enzymatic cleaner or the urine will remain in the fibres and the dog will detect that and return to urinate there.

It would be much cheaper to buy something like the Dr Beckmanns pet stain and odour remover, which is a few pounds and works well, but any pet specific enzymatic cleaner will do. You need to follow the method suggested but it does work.

If the urine is on the walls and any wooden skirting I would use the same on that and repaint it but you can also buy wood safe enzymatic cleaner. Check the pet sections of shops, order on amazon or go to pets at home etc. All far cheaper than hiring a cleaner which won't achieve the same.

As well as using an enzyme cleaner, never use anything with ammonia or pine, as to dogs the smell is similar to urine and draws them back to that spot. Another problem is that wool carpets can smell similar to urine when they are damp, so that also draws them back to that spot.

Take him out on the lead to toilet every hour and praise him like mad when he goes in the right place. He'll soon learn where it is he's supposed to go, and he'll start asking to go out when he needs to.

Dr Beckmann! I don’t know what’s in that stuff but it’s like magic.

I was told biological washing liquid / powder has the same enzyme cleaner in it as the anti-wee animal products only obviously even cheaper.

Great advice, thank you.
