Coffey on the media round this morning

Nurses are getting no more money.

poorer people are richer than you think

The outlawing of smoking in cars containing children is wrong
(and wants to drop smoking action plan, insiders say)

Thanks @jgw1 😁

The contortions you’d have to make to accept that notion feels exhausting. Is that doublethink?

Doesn't this cycle back to Wallpaper-gate and what was Lord Brownlows payback for his generous gift of gold wallpaper for Boris' abode?

The last time I spoke to our local Vicar he had been told he would be running a warm back in the church hall but not given any detail. Was he providing refreshments? Was he supposed to provide tv? Was it just for the elderly and disabled or would mums with young children need to be accommodated? I hope there is guidance but it didn't seem to have reached him a few weeks ago.

Just saw this tweet from Martin Lewis

NEW. Pls share

The @CILIPinfo best practice guide for councils, libraries & others who want to set up warm spaces (warm banks) for those struggling to keep warm this winter's just been published. Free download here: cilip.org.uk/warmspaces

Thanks to it for doing it so swiftly.

Theresa Coffey is just playing to the ones who rabbit on about' the nanny state ' and how they should bring back the cane in schools etc etc.
I hope the doctors and the nurses do go on strike. She needs a reality check.

I have my stupid hat on today. So, the Bank of England have bought bonds(?) off the government to prop up the plunging pound to prevent pension funds collapsing right? (No idea what the means but assume I do) They've spent £billions doing this. Now they're having to do it at second time to prevent the whole thing collapsing, spending £billions more. Where do all these £billions come from and what happens when the Bank of England run out and can no longer sub the government?

the80sweregreat · 11/10/2022 15:07

Fladdermus
Good questions !
I hope someone knows.

As far as I can tell it is all some kind of pyramid selling scheme based on a mysterious quantity called confidence. The money does not actually exist any any meaningful way. The idea of it does and as long as sufficiently few people actually ask for their money everything is fine.

I presume the Bank of England are hoping that all this buying of something will create confidence so everyone will pay attention to trying to collapse a different financial system somewhere else.

MrsDoyle351 · 11/10/2022 15:33

@Fladdermus

have a look at what happened to Sri Lanka when the government there borrowed more than they could pay back.

70 per cent inflation and a lot of shortages.

I seriously think if Truss continues with her ‘plan’, the UK is well and truly fucked.

ie more so than we are already

MrsDoyle351 · 11/10/2022 15:35

Possibly like in Greece where no one could get a pension, luckily Germany bailed them out. But we’re no longer in the EU - so no help for UK

borntobequiet · 11/10/2022 15:40

Coffey is saying that people should be able to smoke in cars with child passengers?
Dear God she’s a nasty piece of work. Vile woman.

Ew.

I don't know why I'm shocked. They
government want to rollback our environmental protections and have more polluted air (and water) generally, but not wanting to protect children from the damage caused by smoking is basically evil isn't it?

God almighty. What creatures have we put in power here?!

AdamRyan · 11/10/2022 15:46

I just caught Kwarteng on the radio and really thought it was Johnson for a bit. Obviously have had the same media training. It was disconcerting

L1ttledrummergirl · 11/10/2022 15:47

What @jgw1. That they have to do this essentially means we are fucked.

It is way beyond my area of expertise, but I think you summarise it well.

Good thread from Ed Conway about the latest IFS report with handy graphs for the financially illiterate like me to explain the impact of the "fiscal event". They've cost us a lot of money, damaged growth and will need to choose between cutting benefits, departments budgets and or investment.

"Exclusive:

Ministers are drawing up plans to increase threshold at which developers must build affordable housing from 10 homes to 40 or 50

Move would bolster small & medium-sized developers but lead to number of affordable homes built falling by a fifth"

https://twitter.com/stevenswinford/status/1579585618505764864?s=46&t=0QIg4owIhEeAA_2TUsUglcA

Now throw out planning restrictions and what do you get?

I suppose the argument is that more homes will be built but somehow I'm not convinced prices will necessarily come down or mortgage rates lower to benefit FTB.

Given the number of developers who are Tory donors I sort of assume they will be the main beneficiary of this (probably the anti Growth Alliance member in me).

Surely the BoE can't carry on pumping money into buying back Govt bond debt to stave off government induced economic meltdown every few weeks for another two years??

SquirrelSoShiny · 11/10/2022 17:05

I had to join this just for the title 😁

Someone has set up a limited company called The Office of Boris Johnson Limited. I'm intrigued!
