Get Britain Shivering?

🥶
I think they are just hoping it's a mild winter , in England and Wales anyway ! They probably don't care about the poor Scots.

Build back colder?

jgw1 · 09/10/2022 16:14

Cold means cold?

InMySpareTime · 09/10/2022 16:16

Putting the Brrrr back into Britain

verdantverdure · 09/10/2022 16:30

the80sweregreat · 09/10/2022 15:48

They will probably hire Wim Hoff to explain how the cold is empowering and to embrace it
Ok if your young and fit , not so much for the elderly or disabled

That's what I was thinking. Sudden rash experts on This Morning and breakfast telly explaining how the brown fat you get from being cold helps you lose weight.

Cornettoninja · 09/10/2022 13:59

I wonder if any of the proposed ‘heat banks’ or community spaces would still be supplied with power? I would guess not but there does seem to be an argument for planning for those things ahead of time rather than in haste when problems become apparent…

oh for a proactive rather than reactive government…

The last time I spoke to our local Vicar he had been told he would be running a warm back in the church hall but not given any detail. Was he providing refreshments? Was he supposed to provide tv? Was it just for the elderly and disabled or would mums with young children need to be accommodated? I hope there is guidance but it didn't seem to have reached him a few weeks ago.

Cornettoninja · 09/10/2022 17:47

@verdantverdure I think the last thing I heard on the radio about warm banks was libraries, community halls etc. pointing out that they couldn’t afford heating bills either! I wouldn’t be surprised if your vicar has stumbled across this too.

ASDA is offering a £1 soup and roll meal deal for over 60's in Nov and Dec.

So depressing that it is coming to this.

Christmas will be tough for many too
Let's hope things look up a bit soon

Rolling blackouts will be fun for everyone who works from home (me included). The company I work for has most of its employees working from home between 0900-2100.
No electric=no broadband=no work.

Maybe that would make a slogan.

It is possible of course that Sunak and Truss were actually the best candidates available within the parliamentary Tory party...

You nearly had me with that one @jgw1 Grin

Presumably rolling blackouts would affect businesses in the areas that had no electricity as well as homes (unless the business had a generator) since I doubt the grid can shut off one building on a street and not others, or even one part of town and not others?

itsgettingweird · 09/10/2022 19:07

Board Boris' busses.

After all there was that low point (or one of many low points) in his career where he proudly mentioned the reason a pensioner could spend all day on a bus for free to save electric and keep warm was thanks to the freedom pass he brought in when Mayor. (And even that was a stretch of the complete truth).

itsgettingweird · 09/10/2022 19:11

No idea jgw but I'd be really interested to know what would happen if we needed to.

Eg set and planned blackouts spread across the country - Eg 1 day a week.

Shorter blackouts nationally daily/ weekly.

Will they close schools? Supermarkets? Leisure facilities?

I really think the government need to say more than "it's highly unlikely".

They did plenty of interviews they could easily say we need to watch what we use to avoid potential shortages in the future because we can store (if we can). They could easily say "if there was blackouts we would .......".

They just stick their fingers in their eyes to any questions about the future or any news they don't want to hear and sell us a line instead.

Freeze for growth
Never tax profits
We don’t care

Not sure if any of those might work. But at least they’d be honestWink

I really do feel that some sort of information campaign about energy saving and/or tips to stay warm is actually necessary. I was shopping yesterday it was mild and sunny yet shops were blasting out heat with open doors. I have also posted another thread about this. After the last few weeks I'm inclined to think whatever Liz Truss says the opposite is true, so if she's not worried I most certainly am.

borntobequiet · 09/10/2022 20:02

I’m in my late 60s and all electric in an old, cold house.
When I came to live here I knew it was going to be expensive to heat but I took that into consideration. However, my monthly electricity payments will now be considerably more than 15% of my monthly income.
Consequently, I’ve implemented a few changes to reduce my usage. They’re not onerous and the effects won’t be drastic. But they will help.
I’m able to do this because I understand how much electricity I use and how I can reduce my usage without causing me distress. Others might not. That’s why a proper public campaign giving advice would be a good idea.

StarryGazeyEyes · 09/10/2022 22:08

I wonder how it's going to pan out with covid numbers rising again. Trying to save energy and keep warm on one hand, keeping windows and doors shut, and then trying to reduce infection through ventilation, doors and windows open, especially for public spaces.

Also that more and more people are going into offices rather than WFH, which is what they wanted right?

He couldn't really leave it longer than that - the BoE Monetary Policy Committee meets on 3rd November.

Cabinet ministers already trying to manage the fallout -

"Resolution Foundation says it's likely to show annual borrowing will be £110billion in 2026/27 - three times higher than in March forecast"

"Cabinet ministers say that OBR must not be allowed to be 'judge, jury & executioner' for govt economic plans

'They are not God. They are just another source of data and evidence and analysis

'We have to be careful of elevating what they say to some kind of gospel status'

As pps have commented, I'm getting a strong sense of deja vu re the early days of covid. Remember when BJ was skipping COBRA meetings (too busy sorting out the financial details of his divorce and procrastinating about telling his kids that Carrie was pregnant)? Boasting about shaking hands with patients? They were dying in the streets in Italy but over here it was just going to be a bad case of flu? They resisted preventative measures then, too. Said the British public wouldn't put up with being told what to do. Not like those sheep over the Channel.

I think it's partly because Truss' laser-like focus on growth means anything happening in the periphery of her blinkered vision is just a blur. But mainly, as with covid, once the govt caves in and is actually forced to address the problem, they own it and open themselves up to criticism for the effectiveness of their response. 'It's Putin's fault' won't wash any more. We'll be blaming the Tory Govt and asking why things are better in France or Germany.

Btw, I was a mum of 2 toddlers and a third on the way during Heath's power cuts. They did it more or less by Borough, or sections of densely-populated ones. You'd be driving through S.London in pitch black and then Lewisham would appear, lit up like Las Vegas by contrast.

The big danger was families using paraffin stoves or lighting fires in blocked up chimneys, so I hope the Fire Brigade is making their own public information plans.

L1ttledrummergirl · 10/10/2022 12:18

I remember when the electricity companies introduced emergency credit on prepayment meters. Families were resorting to candles as they had no electricity and families were dying due to misplaced candles.

I hope that the fire brigade have robust plans in place. Particularly for Tower blocks that still have dodgy cladding.
