Hi ds was offered a job through email for a job jn the civil service, he accepted the offer and filled in a couple of forms re pensions last tues but has no further contact. Does this seem right? The email said if he accepted another team would be in touch but would this take over a week ?

Oh yes! Took 6 months from interview to being in post for me.

FleeUpFreeTime · 06/10/2022 18:34

Why doesn’t he send a follow email to HR/recruitment team?

Nitgel · 06/10/2022 18:42

Yes he will send an email. 6 months, wow.

Takes months... I'm going up a grade in my team internally, so about as simple as it gets..... verbal job offer 6 Sept, hr paperwork 5 Oct.....

PineappleSun · 06/10/2022 18:59

Depends on the department as well, I'm told the current wait to get someone in post is 6-8 weeks

ifonly4 · 06/10/2022 19:09

Does the job require vetting? That can take months.

Singleandproud · 06/10/2022 19:18

I was successful with a non governmental body that uses the same recruitment systems as the civil service. I applied in Feb, heard nothing until mid May and assumed I hadn't made the cut, interviewed and told I had the job at the end of May, filled in the forms and heard nothing for 8 weeks, now they are waiting for me as I have to give 3 months (a terms) notice.

It takes forever and actually is an awful way to recruit people, as a career changer I'm OK as I'm already employed but the talent they must lose as young staff and new graduates won't be able to wait around that long.

moomoo1967 · 06/10/2022 19:19

Dependant on which Gov Agency Vetting is currently taking up to 2 years

pimlicoanna · 06/10/2022 19:20

Totally normal. It takes a long time!

Nitgel · 06/10/2022 19:24

Yes vetting is a requirement so I know this will take ages additionally, ds is a grad and keen to get started. Also needs to start earning! Oh my.

Did they give any indication at interview of when the job starts? What job is it? Different departments have different timescales.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 06/10/2022 19:32

Took my son about a month after offer but that was waiting for equipment as most of it is wfh. I've just had a job offer myself and filled the paperwork in today, hoping it doesn't take months!

ifonly4 · 06/10/2022 19:34

Didn't like to say, but where DH works they're saying up to two years for vetting. They just haven't go the vetting officers and vetting is pretty thorough. Might be worth your DS contacting them to check on timescale. If he's definitely go the job, but it's going to take ages, he may as well work somewhere else in the meantime.

dubyalass · 06/10/2022 19:42

Eight months from application to get into post for me, although I had my DBS etc checks back in a week - that was the quickest part! Recruitment is appalling in CS and apparently they are trying to do something to speed it up, but I’m certain my dept is likely losing good candidates to other jobs because they can start immediately or within a month.

I had to chase up after interview and then once I was offered a job I was rung by the hiring department a week later. It’s slightly better once you’re in but it still took six weeks for an internal move. Dreadful.

RainingYetAgain · 06/10/2022 19:47

Vetting can take quite a while, depending on the level required. I've been retired a while, but sometimes we were able to take people on via an agency while they were being checked- although that was mainly professionally qualified staff with a DBS.
2 years for vetting though- we used to complain about 6-9 months......
When DS was recruited about 3 years ago, he took a coffee shop job while he was waiting.

Tigerblue4 · 06/10/2022 19:56

My DSIL has been offered civil service job, but told vetting can take up to two years - that's despite the fact her DH and DB work at same place (they have to do thorough vetting of family) and regular reviews.

FivePotatoesHigh · 06/10/2022 20:02

Some scare stories about vetting on this thread, it really depends what level.

This is normal however OP and he will just have to be patient, sorry.

Happychappy12345 · 08/12/2022 18:24

I got my offer to start in 2 months

Beansontoast45 · 08/12/2022 18:25

Yes, it takes months from when you get an offer to when you actually start.

VladmirsPoutine · 08/12/2022 18:30

Sorry but why is it taking 2 years or months on end? What if you need to hand in notice? Need to basically plan your life! How are people managing it!

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 08/12/2022 18:34

Vetting can take weeks

Mine only took 4 weeks luckily
Applied end July and started the job early November

Singleandproud · 08/12/2022 19:21

@VladmirsPoutine I applied Feb, interviewed May and provisionally accepted, checks done in July. But since then they've waited for me and I'm due to start in January as I had to give a terms notice, so the waiting has worked both ways.

Merrow · 08/12/2022 19:25

For a grad job I wouldn't expect vetting to be the more hardcore type. They are utterly useless at keeping you informed though. I'd email and ask the process to get the vetting started, as then at least something is being done.

Nitgel · 10/12/2022 10:06

Hi as an update it took 4 weeks and he started quickly afterwards.
