Any ideas on how to occupy myself whilst shoulder and arm are immobilised?

Apologies for any errors, I can only
type on my phone keyboard atm and the screen is small! Dislocated my shoulder on Saturday. Put back in in hospital (after a 10 hour wait!) and in a sling for two weeks awaiting fracture clinic review. Also bruised/cracked my ribs so it really fucking hurts!

I am really limited in what I can do and the days seem very long. I am doing a lot of reading and MNing and online shopping. I have some new kindle books and have started Dahmer on Netflix (DCs' recommendations). I'm frustrated though as I can't sew or do any of my usual activities. I also hate being reliant on other people and can't even put my own socks on Hmm

It's my left shoulder and luckily I am right handed but I also have pain in other joints. I also can't concentrate/remember very well so doing some sort of online course seems out sadly. Lying propped up in bed with a cushion under my arm is the most comfortable position. Any ideas what I can do to fill my time like this when I can only use one arm?

I have been awake for 2.5 hours already and it's only 7.30am...the thought of a whole day to fill is depressing me.

Any ideas gratefully appreciated!

I hope you feel better soon. I got into colouring books when in a similar situation.

Thank you @helpmum2003. I fear I may be one of those annoying OPs who shoots down every suggestion Blush as I can't seem to get into colouring, it doesn't "absorb" me in the way sewing does. I may look at a "learn to draw" video on You Tube maybe though!

Can you crochet? After my breast reduction I did this as it only involves my lower arms.

I hope you get more comfortable soon!

EnoughReallyIsEnough · 06/10/2022 09:52

I would actually love to learn how to crochet but I think it would need two "free" hands? My left hand is strapped up and I can only use both hands together if I put my right hand next to it (like for typing on the phone).

God this is driving me demented! DH just brought me a bar of whole nut chocolate and I don't think it's too early to start on it Brew

That post probably made zero sense. My left arm is strapped across my body with the elbow at 90 degrees.

I used Duolingo for hours when I was in a sling for 6 weeks! Can't remember any of what I learnt now, but it kept me occupied 😆

Order a couple of nice jigsaws from Amazon and sit and do one of them with a series on the TV.

If you do Christmas cards, order them and get them written and ready to post. Online Xmas shopping.

EnoughReallyIsEnough · 06/10/2022 09:58

Ooh that is a good idea! I would actually love to learn some Latin.

I'm definitely doing the shopping part Grin Of course I just ordered some DC Christmas stuff from ASOS yesterday and then saw a discount code this morning Hmm

How about teaching yourself shorthand? (I've no idea why that just came to mind 😂). I learnt Pitman New Era at college many moons ago and always regretted not getting my speed right up. I found a book in a charity shop a few years ago and refreshed my memory a bit - handy sometimes when making notes at work.

Audiobooks. I was ill recently and got through LOADS

LadyHelenaJustina · 06/10/2022 12:36

...our local library has audiobooks to borrow free, so I didn't need to rely on Audible.

This was on the BBC website a couple of days ago, you might find some useful tips! https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-63122254

Embroidery or tapestry on a frame?
You'll have to bring your hands together for threading the needle but I made a tapestry stool top with a broken left wrist a few years back, I had the frame on a floor stand and rested it on the knees.
It might not be a comfortable position with sore ribs too, but hopefully they'll heal quickly. Get well soon !

Audiobooks
BBC radio dramas
Architectural Digest videos on youtube
Do a course on Future Learn or Domestika or Skillshare
Plan your next gardening/decorating project
Painting - watercolour, acrylic

Enjoy the rest!

Thank you for all ideas! I really wish I could get into audiobooks as reading is my favourite thing to do Smile but I don't seem to have the concentration unless I can see the words. I have started re-reading the Wolf Hall books which is extreme comfort reading!

Some good ideas here thank you all, I will definitely look at a frame, I have been doing a giant cross stitch for the last sixteen months and was nearly finished so this is very bad timing! So frustrating.

DH has helped me shower and put clean PJs on and changed all the bed linen so the bed feels nice and snuggly Smile I have a little stand thing to prop my iPad up which makes it easier too.
