Cystitis help!

Prettypeoniepetals · 06/10/2022 06:49

Woke up in the night feeling the onset of cystitis. Got up earlier and still have that feeling of I’m getting it. Any recommendations on what I can take to try and stave it off? I have googled and paracetamol (had that), cranberry and probiotics seem recommended but am desperately hoping someone has a good idea before it’s full blown.

Lots of fluid! Sometimes I've managed to pee it out as soon as I get The Grumblings.

D-Mannose - you can get it off Amazon and it should really help, plus you can take it as a preventative.

lots of water to flush it out, cranberry juice drinks are mostly sugar and water - so unless you juice it yourself don’t bother

As a regular sufferer I would say: camomile tea, lots of water, those cystitis sachets that dissolve in water, and Actimel.

Also, for me, loose clothing especially knickers, and no sex until the cystitis feeling has gone

TooHotToTangoToo · 06/10/2022 07:15

I keep cranberry tablets in the house and almost overdose on the and rink loads of water. I also find a glad if orange juice helps me, although a lot of places say not to drink it because of the acid, but I find it helps

Poor thing!
I second D-mannose. If it's e.coli that will deal with it. Otherwise those sachets of sodium citrate that turn your urine alkaline after it goes through your kidneys. That will offset the acid produced by any bacteria and make your bladder less irritated.
Hot drinks rather than cold helped me more, but flushing is good. You're looking for the bladder to shed a lining of cells to get rid of the clingy bacteria, you can usually see when that happens.

After that it's send a sample.to the doctor for a Dip test.

D manrose tablets and no fizzy drinks or ones containing artificial sweeteners.

TheMoops · 06/10/2022 08:30

Effervescent vitamin c tablets.
They work every time for me.

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/10/2022 08:34

Lay off alcohol.
Wear cotton pants or none at all.
No bubble baths.
Eat a bland diet. No acidic foods like oranges or tomatoes.

Basically this! Also a GP once told me that anecdotally ibuprofen seems to work better than paracetamol on cystitis and I've definitely found this to be the case.

Sympathies and hope you feel better soon.

spiderlight · 06/10/2022 09:56

Cystopurin sachets - they work much much better than any of the other sachets. D-mannose will help too. I take it daily as a preventative and barely ever get cystitis now, whereas I used to be plagued by it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/10/2022 09:57

Except for once* when I was abroad and couldn’t get them, I’ve found that the cystitis relief sachets you can buy in Boots or U.K. supermarkets have sorted it very quickly. Plus of course plenty of water.

*In that case I ended up needing ABs. I never go anywhere without those sachets now.

Seeline · 06/10/2022 10:34

Which D Mannose do you recommend? I've looked on Amazon and there are so many varieties!

Prettypeoniepetals · 07/10/2022 05:19

Thanks everyone for your input and words of wisdom. I drank a lot of water, had paracetamol and have ordered some D Mannose. I think I have caught it early as i have woken up feeling not too bad. I did a covid test last night because I have an event at a care home this weekend and it came back positive. I was feeling achey and coldy so thought I should test. But interestingly there is a link between covid and cystitis. Covid seems to be the gift that keeps on giving.

Holland & Barrett do effervescent D mannose tablets - they're very good
