Anyone read the Financial Times?

I keep seeing FT articles I want to read but they're behind a paywall. It's £159 for an annual subscription. I'm tempted. Does anyone here subscribe and think it's worth it? (Of course it would probably result in me spending less time on Mumsnet).

Yes, I subscribe. It’s a very good paper, but probably only if you are interested in the financial reporting as a whole.

EmmaH2022 · 05/10/2022 23:03

Have you done the 4 weeks trial for £1?

GreenLunchBox · 05/10/2022 23:05

I absolutely love it. I subscribe mainly for the comments
I'm sure I've spotted Xenia on there 🤣

Xiaoxiong · 05/10/2022 23:05

I subscribe and read daily, but I do work in finance. I would do a trial and see how you get on - it's too financial for DH, for instance, though he likes reading the news and life & style sections when I get the physical paper on weekends.

Itstheimplication · 05/10/2022 23:09

I do and think it’s worth it. It’s factual, non sensationalist and covers a broad range of news.
They’ve got an app now for a different kind of digital subscription as well I think

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 05/10/2022 23:09

I used to. Now I usually just buy the Saturday edition at the shop.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 05/10/2022 23:16

I'm not sure but is it possible to read it for free on the library's Libby app?

YankeeDad · 05/10/2022 23:19

I have the FT but also The Economist. Except for the daily gossip about financial markets and politics, if you want to track what is happening and also read thought provoking articles about politics, economy and society in many parts of the world, I would say that The Economist is much better. Despite the name it is not mostly about economics, not by any stretch. I have been thinking about cancelling the FT.

I can get the archive for free from the library, but it's a month out of date, which takes the edge off a bit.

I do but through work. Do you know anyone at university who can get you a student rate which is a lot less

user1494050295 · 06/10/2022 07:28

Or do you have a child at college? They usually have good offers

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 06/10/2022 07:32

I use archive.ph to read the very few FT articles that interest me

Xiaoxiong · 06/10/2022 10:27

@YankeeDad I really want to like the Economist, I often pick it up while travelling but my problem is that whenever I read anything in the Economist which I actually know something about (eg. in my own field) they are frequently biased and sometimes just spectacularly wrong. It makes me worry that on other topics where I have no knowledge or background, they are equally wrong but I just can't tell. The FT is usually spot on with stuff I do know about, so it makes it easier for me to trust the remainder of what I read.

Hah yes I’m sure I know what her FT username is too!

I read it daily but using my work’s corporate subscription - any chance of that?

YankeeDad · 06/10/2022 10:34

@Xiaoxiong That is really interesting ... I find myself usually agreeing with them but it is possible that I am being misled. Would you mind sharing an example or two with me? Using DM if you prefer?

Chateaudiaries · 06/10/2022 10:42

Listeners of the podcast ‘The Rest is Politics’ were offered a FT discount code this week. Think it was 50% so worth checking out.

Its also a great podcast btw.

I agree with these comments about The Economist. I'm disillusioned with it now

DeborahVance · 06/10/2022 12:25

Agree with Xiaoxiong re the FT being particularly accurate. My field is nearly always inaccurately reported in all other papers, but not in the FT
