Hair extensions

If you have tried hair extensions before, what are your pros and cons?

I have lost a bit of hair due to stress and want hair extensions mainly for a thickness boost. Considering methods like tape, nano rings and pre-bonded - how do these feels once installed? And did they damage your natural hair?

clip ins are a bit of a faff for me, looking for something with less daily maintenance 🙂

I've had the glue in ones before, they were a total faff.

They took aaaaaaages to dry when washed, uncomfortable, and a total pain in the arse. I had them for my wedding and couldn't wait to take them out!

MissyCooperismyShero · 05/10/2022 20:59

I had prebonded too. They were visible as my hair was/is so thin. They stopped me washing my hair as often as I wanted. Couldn't wait to get them out.

MissyCooperismyShero · 05/10/2022 21:00

And yes, they did damage my hair but I don't care, just wanted them out. Certainly do not recommend

I had nano rings, I loved them & how they looked, when I took them out my hair was broken and very fine. I'm still so tempted to have them done again though!
Clip ins are far less maintenance.
Proper ones you must blow dry your hair, must use oils, plait it at night, separate them every day so they don't mat together. Use special shampoo and conditioner, cover it in the sun A massive commitment.

mynameischloe · 05/10/2022 21:09

Clip ins would be less daily maintenance. I buy Milk and Blush ones. Excellent quality and colour match.

I lost all my hair due to cancer and when it was growing at that horrid stage I decided to get some. I ended up with I think it's called LA weave? Pro for me is I looked like me for the firsts time in years and it made me feel pretty again.

Cons
Very expensive and a lot of maintenance. I've recently taken them out and have lost a lot of hair which I wouldn't have had I just waited it out and grew it for another year. It costs £100 every 8-10 weeks to adjust them and more often than not they would come out after less than 8 weeks.

I have had tape extensions for many years. For thickness rather than length. I have always had thin hair and now it’s not. Best things ever. I can’t ever foresee a time when I won’t have them. I originally had bonded extensions but they ruined my hair. Never again. Only have the tapes now. 2 friends also have them (on my recommendation) they also love them. We are all in our 50’s.
No one can tell and people are always surprised when I confess.
Only cons as far as I’m concerned are having to go every 8 or 9 weeks to have them taken out and replaced, and obviously they cost more overall but it’s a price I’m willing to pay.

Wfhandbored · 05/10/2022 21:21

Tapes are the best ever. I've had everything for the last 15 years and settled with tapes so happily. My hair is the healthiest it has been in years and the quality of the hair is great if you buy right and get someone good to fit them.

200degrees · 05/10/2022 21:23

ahhh thank you all! pre bonded/glue in seem like a no for me then

@Matildahoney were the nano extensions visible? Was it annoying running your fingers through your hair or sleeping or did you get use to the feel?

Ahhh that list is long, but honestly I do most of the care steps now so I think I’ll be okay with that!

@mynameischloe yes I’ve heard of milk and blush thanks! Forgot about them. I just cba to put clip ins in every day, would rather wake up with nice hair haha

I have an LA weave, I think it’s called that? Nano rings and it’s sewn in. Had it for about 3 -4 years and only had to replace the hair once in that time.
Has to be ‘moved up’ about every 8-10 weeks.
I love it, have it for thickness rather than length…was sick of having fine, crappy hair! Doesn’t seem to have damaged my own hair at all.
Very fortunate to have a mobile hairdresser who is brilliant and doesn’t charge the earth.
Hair costs about £150-200… I buy online from a site called Additional Lengths

Matildahoney · 06/10/2022 08:19

@200degrees no not visible and my hair is pretty fine, no one could tell they were extensions, they looked amazing, I had a few different hairdressers tell me they didn't realise they were extensions they looked so good.
Also you have the 8 weekly maintenance & refit appointments, so I think my original appointment including colour was about £500 then at least £100 a time for maintenance.
They took a couple of days after they were put in and then again at each refit to get used to as they were quite tight to the scalp so you could feel a bit of a pull but not uncomfortable. I'm happy to DM you a picture of the back of them.

If you have hair loss or hair damage then glue or rings is likely to damage it further (I’ve had both over the years).

When my hair was badly damaged due to a massive hairdresser error I went here -

www.godivahairlossspecialists.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw-fmZBhDtARIsAH6H8qjB2_NmPR3rn4cI-SavPkOpEIowU4Dhsx61L5D-q_QBViOGree9vY4aAnemEALw_wcB

This is the original salon, but it’s worth a read through their website to understand better about hair extensions. They specialise in hair loss and their work for ladies with hair loss is amazing.

I had a secret weave and it looks amazingly natural, the hair lasts about a year with 8 weekly maintenance appointments. And best bit - it hasn’t damaged my hair!!

They have people who are qualified all over the UK and I can’t recommend them highly enough.

A nano weft/ weave, perfect for thin fine hair and doesn't damage your own hair

michopoku · 29/01/2025 09:35

My mum went through a period of hair thinning after a stressful year, and she really struggled to find extensions that wouldn’t cause more damage. She tried bonded extensions first, but they were uncomfortable and made things worse. Eventually, she switched to more natural, lightweight options that blended seamlessly and didn’t require constant upkeep.
