Last had a check up 10 months ago and wasn't told there were any issues. I'm 7 months pregnant if it's relevant as I know teeth can go bad during pregnancy but what the fuck.. I've had toothache so I took a photo to see. I thought oh my god there dirty there's bits in them.. nope I've brushed them multiple times they are still the same. What? I'm panicking I'm going to have to have all my teeth taken out. What's happened?

What happens with the holes in a tooth that's already had a root canal? Will the tooth have to come out?

It can just be filled again until the point it becomes too much filling and not enough tooth. Some can have a crown. It looks more like erosion from that picture though.

omgwhatthefuck · 05/10/2022 20:21

@MrsMorton How would erosion be fixed? Sad

Diet & lifestyle changes, maybe a small filling.

Stop stressing yourself out about something that might not even be an issue.

Get yourself on a waiting list, even if you pay for a private check up to find out the state of play, whilst you're looking for an NHS dentist.

Three pregnancies (and sickness / chest infections with endless antibiotics / then extended breastfeeding) have absolutely wrecked my once almost perfect teeth.

not what you want to read I know
ive had to have several fillings and three extractions and now regularly see a hygienist but my teeth will never be the same

Travellingwomble · 05/10/2022 20:33

Start brushing your teeth and tongue. Use a soft brush if you're heavy handed, to protect your gums. Waterpik and floss. Also dont brush teeth for 1 hour after eating. Slosh mouth with water after meals until you can brush your teeth. Google brushing techniques. Avoid sugary foods, acidic foods and drinks.

Do you mean the dark brown bits? Thats tooth decay and if there's pain probsies need a filling xx

MadeofCheeese · 05/10/2022 20:40

I have just had my baby and my teeth have gone a bit wrong too. I bit the bullet and paid for a private checkup. I now have 3 problem teeth but not bad enough yet to have to pay for more treatment. Now I know I can save up. Its better to have a check up and find out sooner rather than later.

Tigerbus · 05/10/2022 20:42

Drink meat broth, eat organic liver and kidney every day for the next two weeks. No chicken and No fried food. What No pasta, no rice and very little potato. Eat raw carrots 3 times a week. Rinse your mouth out with coconut oil and floss 3x a day. Drink only water or meat broth during these two week.

Your teeth will improve and you will have no tooth pain.

I'm vegetarian and that sounds like actual torture! Blush

Could be staining, could also suggest caries (some teeth look grey/pitted).

Which tooth is causing pain? What kind of pain? How long for and does anything worsen it? The pain from a (failing) root filled tooth would be a constant dull ache/throb, may feel spongey and or painful to bite on and may be worse at night, when lying down. Your sleep would probably be disturbed and you’d want painkillers.

If you are pregnant then on the NHS everything IS ‘free’ (you’re exempt from charges). Do you have a local dental hospital? They usually offer free treatment, particularly if you go in with pain. Alternatively call out of hours/111 who can direct you to an emergency dentist (who will only be required to get you out of pain, not look at your whole mouth)

Options for root filled teeth if theres a hole could include a new filling or a crown although it’s not always possible. If the tooth is causing pain as a result of a failing root filling then realistically it would need to come out. Then options to replace gap could include bridge, denture or private implant but these options are dependent on other factors such as gum health and caries risk.

In the meantime use a fluoride toothpaste, interdental brushes and minimise frequency of meals/snacks/sugary drinks (including tea/coffee with sugar and fizzy drinks!) to 3/4 times per day. Not always easy i know.

@Tigerbus Sorry to say, that won’t do a lot.

Looks like some staining on the molars and premolars that a hygienist can help with. Cutting down on tea and coffee may help stop it getting worse. The canal on the canine looks concerning, I'd definitely get that checked. It might not need something as drastic as an extraction, but it is definitely best to see a dentist face to face who can propose a treatment plan for you.

Calmdown14 · 05/10/2022 21:45

You might want to up your calcium uptake. Your growing baby is basically stealing yours!

Pregnancy does affect your teeth but it does settle.

Ring round NHS dentists to see if any will see you as an emergency. You might get lucky as a higher priority

You have cavities and soft spots.

You need to find a dentist as soon as the baby is born.

blacksax · 05/10/2022 22:27

My NHS dentist really took the piss when I was pregnant, and for the 12 months treatment you're supposed to get afterwards. I went for regular checkups, and was told other than a basic clean and polish, nothing needed doing. Then, first appointment once I had to start paying again, all of a sudden apparently there was loads of work I needed to have done. That I had to pay for.

Same. Second pregnancy was the one that really did it. I have hyper mobility disorder as well which can apparently affect teeth so between DD and that I was fucked. I saw the dentist regularly but I now realise he wasn’t brilliant and the EDS wasn’t really well understood at the time either. I had several abscesses and lost most of my back teeth in quick succession.

finally in my 40s I’m kind of back on track and feel better about things. I had a little cosmetic work done and a cobalt chrome plate for the missing back teeth and I feel more confident.
